As part of improving the experience of FreeBSD on laptops and desktops, FreeBSD developers have updated their drm-kmod port against the state of the Linux 6.12 LTS kernel.
The drm-kmod work on FreeBSD and other BSDs continues to be a trailing, moving target against the latest upstream open-source graphics drivers in the Linux kernel. Linux 6.12 debuted in November 2024 and was that year's Long Term Support (LTS) kernel while the latest upstream kernel state is, of course, Linux 7.2 development. At least in moving to Linux 6.12 LTS, FreeBSD's drm-kmod has support for a number of newer Intel and AMD Radeon graphics hardware along with performance improvements and new features.
The updated drm-kmod port will work with FreeBSD 15.1 and onward. More details on the updated FreeBSD graphics driver port from the Linux kernel can be found via FreeBSDFoundation.org.
