The media subsystem changes were merged tonight for the Linux 7.2 merge window and it includes the long-awaited AMD ISP4 driver now in the mainline kernel.. This ISP4 driver is what completes the loop for enabling the web camera on the HP ZBook Ultra G1a and other future high-end AMD Ryzen laptops.

It's taken longer than expected and in the interim the Ubuntu OEM kernel and the like have carried the AMD ISP4 driver for enabling web camera support on the likes of the HP ZBook Ultra G1a Strix Halo laptop, but as of minutes ago this driver has finally reached the mainline kernel.

The media updates for Linux 7.2 in addition to landing AMD ISP4 also include a driver for the Intel Computer Vision Sensing Controller (CVS), HDMI CEC Latency Indication Protocol (LIP) support, the new AVMatrix HWS capture driver, Qualcomm SM6350 and SM6115 platform support, and other media driver enhancements.

The Intel Computer Vision Sensing is found on Lunar Lake, Panther Lake, and Arrow Lake platforms thus far as a V4L2 sub-device for managing CSI-2 link ownership between Linux and firmware for camera sensors. Also notable on the Intel side is for the int3472 driver in adding TPS68470 board data for Nova Lake.

Lots of great changes on the media side for Linux 7.2 but the most exciting I find is the AMD ISP4 driver after a lot of work in getting it upstream over the past year. At least it's now ready ahead of next-gen AMD Ryzen laptops.
