Singapore is enacting stricter work safety measures for one month beginning in July after a spate of workplace fatalities in the city-state.
The initiative increases safety violation fines to S$3,000 ($2,318) from S$2,000 for first-time offenses, the Ministry of Manpower said in a statement on Friday. Companies found to have exceptionally unsafe conditions could have operations suspended for a minimum of eight weeks, an increase from five weeks, the ministry said. If a company’s violations are determined to be egregious, it could be barred from hiring new migrant workers for three months.
