Amazon Announces Multibillion-Dollar Data Center in Misso...
2026-06-16 · via Hacker News: Front Page

Amazon Web Services is making a major push into Missouri with a multibillion-dollar investment in a new data center campus in Montgomery County, the company announced today.

The project is expected to create more than 400 full-time data center jobs, along with thousands of construction roles during the build-out. Positions will include electricians, HVAC technicians, network specialists, operations managers, and other technical roles offering competitive pay and benefits.

The campus will support AWS cloud computing and AI workloads, powering services used daily by millions for remote work, streaming, healthcare, and finance. It builds on Amazon’s existing presence in Missouri, where the company already employs more than 10,000 people and supports another 10,000 jobs across related industries.

Energy and Sustainability Details

Amazon has reached agreements with local utility Ameren Missouri designed so that costs associated with the new campus are not passed on to other ratepayers. The company has also invested in a 138 MW carbon-free energy project in the state, generating enough power for more than 28,000 homes.

On the water front, the facilities will emphasize efficiency with features including:

  • Free-air cooling for approximately 90% of the time
  • Rainwater harvesting to cover about 20% of annual water needs
  • On-site recycling that reuses water up to six times
  • Expected water use for cooling on only about 7% of the year or less at full capacity

Amazon projects the site will use less than 0.1% of the local aquifer’s annual recharge volume from rainfall.

Community and Economic Impact

The investment is projected to generate hundreds of millions of dollars in new tax revenue for Montgomery County and the region over time—significantly more than the previous land use. Amazon is also committing over $7 million in direct community contributions, including:

  • $3 million for emergency dispatch services and public safety infrastructure
  • Over $1 million for a new community gathering space at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds
  • Additional funding for roadway and water infrastructure improvements
  • STEM education programs, teacher grants, and the new Amazon Montgomery County Community Fund for local projects

The company will donate completed water infrastructure to the local public water supply district at no cost.

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe welcomed the news, calling it a boost for infrastructure, tax revenue, and economic growth. Amazon executives emphasized long-term partnership and community benefits.

This development positions Montgomery County as an emerging data center hub in the Midwest, alongside other recent large-scale tech investments in the area. Construction is expected to ramp up in the coming months.
