Attending a designated catchment school is beneficial because:
Students in Kindergarten to Grade 6 who attend their designated catchment school and live more than 1.6 km away are eligible for transportation. Nursery students attending French Milieu schools, or Niji Mahkwa and Isaac Brock (for Indigenous language programs only) are also eligible if they live more than 1.6 km away. Transportation must be requested through the school after the student is registered. Transportation is not available for Grade 7 and higher students.
Families may request a free interpreter through Winnipeg School Division’s Newcomer Services to support the registration process. For additional support, contact the International Education Program office, including for families on visitor visas, study permits, or work permits.
Schools of Choice applications for 2026/27 are now closed.
Students who are new to the division must complete a new-student registration form before submitting a Schools of Choice application. Applications are reviewed by the division’s Superintendents’ Department and do not guarantee placement.
For the 2026/27 school year, Winnipeg School Division is not accepting Schools of Choice applications for the following schools (exceptions may be considered for special family circumstances):
Students living outside of division boundaries must complete a new student registration form before completing the Schools of Choice application.
Schools of Choice applications are reviewed by the Superintendents’ Department and are subject to space and staffing availability. Applying does not guarantee enrolment. Under provincial guidelines, priority is given to catchment area students, then within-division students, followed by non-resident students. Families will be contacted by the Superintendents' Department with the enrolment decision once the application is reviewed.
Most of our schools offer a free, half-day nursery program for children who live in the division and turn four on or before December 31 of the school year. Nursery is optional. École J.B. Mitchell School does not offer Nursery.
Your child must be five years old on or before December 31 of the current school year.
The registration form does not ask families to choose a.m. or p.m. Nursery or Kindergarten, as not all schools offer both options. School offices will contact families to ask for their preference, in the order registrations are received.
Entrance exams or tryouts are not required for division-wide programs. Families should review the program's expectations before enrolling.
