I'm an academic. When I taught C++ last year, many students struggled because the IDE completed a lot of the code for them; their programming assignments scored high marks, but they struggled to answer basic programming questions in written tests. We've adjusted by weighting the tests more heavily, and it seems to help.
When I learned to program we had very few programming tools, but I feel I learned more basic skills as a result.
Have people in the industry noticed a difference? Do new hires have as good programming skills as before?
