Apple has long delayed entering the foldable smartphone market, with rumors dating back to 2015 suggesting the company’s hesitancy was primarily due to the prominent screen creases seen on competing devices. However, a recent TrendForce report indicates that Apple may have solved this engineering hurdle using a combination of variable-thickness glass and a specialized, high-tech adhesive.

According to the report, Apple has patented an ultra-thin glass (UTG) design with variable thickness. The glass is chemically strengthened and designed to be locally thinned at the bending axis to enhance flexibility, while the non-folding regions remain thicker to maintain impact resistance.
To fully eliminate the visible line, Apple is reportedly utilizing an optically clear adhesive (OCA). While screen creases are typically caused by fatigue stress and glass deformation from repeated folding, the OCA helps distribute this physical stress. Additionally, the adhesive has micro-flow characteristics, allowing it to act as a liquid that fills microscopic irregularities formed over long-term use. This minimizes light scattering and significantly reduces the visibility of the crease.
The upcoming device, which may be named the iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra, is rumored to feature a 7.8-inch main display supplied by Samsung Display. Apple engineers reportedly rejected multiple display samples from Samsung before approving the current solution. The screen will feature a unique 4:3 aspect ratio, offering an iPad-like tablet experience. Previous speculation suggested the seamless display would rely on a liquid metal hinge and a specialized glass support structure.
The foldable device is expected to debut in late 2026, with potential launch windows pointing toward Apple’s usual September event alongside the iPhone 18 lineup, or a separate December release. Positioned to compete with premium foldables, pricing is projected to start around $2,000, with some estimates reaching up to $2,399. TrendForce forecasts that Apple will capture roughly 20% of the foldable smartphone market immediately upon release.
