By my translating the exchange 2007 unleashed book, I found some noun about project phases. A number of documents are produced during each phase to ensure that the phase is well defined and ultimately successful.

There are four phase following: INITIATION, PLANNING, TESTING, and PILOT. By the initiation phase, the goals and requirements of the project can be identified and documented in a Statement of Work document. Other phase need the document that like Design document within planning phase, Project Schedule and Migration documents and so on.

What's mean about the SOW?

A statement of work (SOW) is a document used in the Systems Development (with ICN) Life Cycle. An organization desiring to have work done (i.e., the prospective customer) produces an SOW as part of a Request for Proposals. Software vendors or services companies (prospective contractors) respond with Proposals. The SOW specifies requirements at a very high level. Detailed requirements and pricing are usually specified at a later stage.

工作陈述的三个特征

1、工作陈述是一份简短的文档。它既不是一份设计文档,也不是一份完整的法律合同。它应该是在高层商抓住要点。SOW的作用是奠定工作范围,开始定义最终产品。
2、保证客户与高层管理者能充分评审并批准工作陈述,然后才有可能切实地着手进行项目的其他活动。
3、一份工作陈述获得批准,便应对这份文档进行版本控制,并将它作为软件项目计划的一部分。
