The weather beacon atop the Old John Hancock Building flashes color-coded warnings depending on the forecast.
Three teens avoided capture Wednesday after they allegedly tried climbing the iconic weather beacon atop the Old John Hancock Building, according to Boston police.
Officers responded to 200 Berkeley St. around 8:21 p.m. for a report of people climbing the beacon, which sits dozens of stories above street level, police said. According to a Boston police spokesperson, a caller reported that the three individuals on the structure were not secured with safety equipment.
However, a thorough search of the building’s rooftop turned up no suspects and no signs of forced entry or damage to rooftop access points, the spokesperson said. Police also learned that the three teenagers had pushed past a security guard to exit through the building’s front entrance, purportedly knocking the guard to the ground.
The teens allegedly fled down Stuart Street toward Clarendon Street, and the guard declined medical attention.
Boston police said their investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
Officially known as the Berkeley Building, the tower is home to a weather beacon that flashes color-coded warnings depending on the forecast.
