Delta Air Lines customers on short flights will soon be left high and dry when it comes to snacks and beverages.

The Atlanta-based airline is ending its free snack and beverage service in economy cabins on flights of less than 350 miles beginning on May 19.

The change will impact 9% of Delta’s flights, which all have under 1 hour of flight time in the air, according to a Delta spokesperson. Delta flights of less than 250 miles — such as flights between Boston and New York — currently don’t include snacks and beverages, so for those flights there is no change.

“Delta is adjusting onboard beverage service to create a more consistent experience across our network,” Delta wrote in a statement provided to Boston.com. “Customers traveling in Delta Comfort and Delta Main on flights 350 miles and above will now receive full beverage and snack service, while shorter flights will no longer offer food and beverage service—with the exception of Delta First which always receives full service.”

The airline is phasing out its “Express Service” for economy cabin passengers between 250 and 500 miles, which included water, coffee, tea, and two snack options. The flights transitioning to no service previously received Express Service.

What’s more, the airline is expanding its snack and beverage service on flights between 350 and 500 miles that previously received Express Service — about 14% of its daily flights. Those passengers will now receive full snack and beverage service, which includes all alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and four snack options.

“Even on the small number of flights without beverage service, our crew will continue to be visible, available, and focused on caring for our customers, like they do on every flight,” Delta wrote in the statement.
