A 32-year-old man was arrested Thursday after allegedly shooting two Manchester Department of Public Works employees, authorities announced. 

The workers were walking on a sidewalk near Manchester Street and Union Street around 9:20 a.m. Thursday when they were approached by a man known to one of them, according to a statement shared on Facebook from the Manchester Police Department.

The man allegedly fired a single shot from a handgun, striking both workers, police said. 

The employees, whose names were not released, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Both were treated at a hospital and later released, authorities said. 

Police identified the suspect as 32-year-old Sean Day. He was arrested at a business in Manchester and charged with two counts of first-degree assault.

“The crime does not appear to be random, and there is believed to be no threat to the public,” police said. 

The investigation remains ongoing. 

“I have spoken with both victims and am grateful that they are recovering,” Mayor Jay Ruais said. “My prayers remain with all affected by this senseless crime. This was a despicable act, and I hope justice is served quickly.”

Police Chief Peter Marr praised officers and detectives for quickly identifying and arresting the suspect. 

“This was a shocking and brazen act of violence that is completely unacceptable,” Marr said. “Our thoughts remain with the city employees who were injured, their families, and the departments affected by this incident. We wish them a speedy recovery.”
