A former Middleborough fire captain is accused of secretly filming his stepdaughter naked in the family home’s bathroom using hidden cameras, police said.
Eric Gunnison, 59, faces 23 counts of photographing or electronically surveilling a nude or partially nude person without consent, one count of unauthorized access to a computer system, and one count of harassment, court documents show.
Gunnison was arraigned in Wareham District Court on June 18 and pleaded not guilty to all charges, court records show. An attorney for Gunnison could not be reached for comment.
The ex-fire captain was released on personal recognizance on the condition he has no contact with his former stepdaughter, and must stay away from any victims or witnesses, court records show.
Local media outlets report Gunnison was placed on leave in November 2025, and has since resigned from the Middleborough Fire Department. The Middleborough Town Manager did not immediately respond to a Boston.com request for comment.
In November 2025, Gunnison’s ex-wife notified police of many alleged images she had discovered on Gunnison’s iPad in early July 2025, police said.
The woman alleged she originally discovered a series of photos on Gunnison’s iPad of her daughter nude from the waist down in March 2025. The woman initially believed the alleged photos were taken from Gunnison’s cell phone, but later realized they were allegedly recorded via a hidden bathroom camera, the statement of facts said.
Just a couple weeks after the alleged first batch photos were found, the victim moved out of the home after she told her mother she did not feel “comfortable around Eric,” police said.
On July 4, 2025, the ex-wife went through Gunnison’s iPad where she allegedly discovered more videos of her daughter naked, police wrote in the statement of facts.
“There were also photographs [the woman] believed were screenshots from pornographic material of a girl performing sexual acts who she said looks a lot like [her daughter] but it is not her,” police said.
The next day, the former wife allegedly confronted Gunnison about the photos, police said.
“Eric did not deny that he had any involvement with the photographs located on the iPad, he also did not make any admissions,” police said.
The ex-wife told allegedly Gunnison she wanted a divorce and left their home, Middleborough police wrote in the statement of facts.
Investigators said they found 150 thumbnail images on Gunnison’s iPad. The majority of the photos are allegedly of his stepdaughter in “various stages of nudity,” officers wrote.
Police did not locate the hidden cameras, and when asked where they were, Gunnison allegedly said he destroyed them, police said.
Forensic data allegedly shows Gunnison searched online for “best quality mini spy cams” and “motorola spy cam,” police said.
Gunnison is scheduled to appear in court on August 20 for a pretrial hearing.
