A 40-year-old man from Whiting, Maine, died early Saturday morning in a crash in nearby Charlotte, according to State Police.

Robert Boggia Jr. allegedly threatened patrons at a Calais bar with a gun, fled before police arrived, and then was spotted driving a red Corvette on Route 1 at about 150 mph.

Local police attempted to catch up to him but were unsuccessful, State Police said. He then drove past a Washington County sheriff’s deputy on Charlotte Road in Charlotte. The deputy also wasn’t able to catch Boggia but eventually drove past the crash site, according to police.

“Boggia was ejected from the vehicle and was located a significant distance from the crashed vehicle,” police said. “High speed was the largest contribution to the crash. Investigation into the events prior to the crash are ongoing, and toxicology results are pending an examination of the decedent.”

The crash occurred shortly before 1 a.m. Boggia was the only person in the vehicle.
