New Movies Streaming

‘Glory’ (1989)

There’s plenty of war movies to pick from for Memorial Day weekend, but I’ll go with the local connection by spotlighting this Oscar-winning Civil War drama about the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the Union army’s first Black units. The earliest scenes focus on the exploits of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick), but it’s Denzel Washington — in an Oscar-winning performance as Private Trip — who steals the show. The movie will be leaving Netflix on June 1, so the time to watch is now.

‘Arco’ (2025)

One of the final Oscar nominees from the past year arriving on streaming, this Best Animated Feature contender is about a 10-year-old boy who inadvertently travels back in time from his idyllic life into the chaos of 2075. With the help of a young girl and her robot companion/caretaker, Arco must try to find a way home. The French film has an all-star cast for the English dub of the dialogue, including Mark Ruffalo, Natalie Portman, Will Ferrell, and Andy Samberg.

More new movies streaming: “The Bride!” (HBO Max); “The Home” (Hulu); “Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair” (Peacock); “Ladies First” (Netflix); “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War” (Prime Video)

New TV Shows Streaming

‘The Mandalorian’

I think the newest “Star Wars” movie, “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” was a decent enough effort; it’s a low-stakes adventure that makes good use of IMAX technology, but it certainly doesn’t hold a candle to the epic scale of your typical “Star Wars” theatrical film. Ultimately, the Jon Favreau show that inspired the film is the better watch, especially Season 1. (Note: You don’t need to see the show before heading to theaters for the new movie.)

‘Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed’

In what is becoming a pattern on Apple TV, “Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed” tells another story of a suburbanite who descends down a dark path of crime and vice. This time, it’s newly divorced mom Paula (Tatiana Maslany, “Orphan Black”), who begins investigating a crime after she’s convinced she witnessed one. Is she onto something, or is she just looking for a distraction from her custody battle?

‘Strangers with Candy’

If you’re already missing Stephen Colbert following the star-studded series finale of “The Late Show,” check out this bizarre Comedy Central show from the turn of the century. Amy Sedaris’ surreal satire of after-school specials features a deep-cut Colbert role, playing a closeted high school history teacher.

More new TV shows streaming: “The Boroughs” Season 1 (Netflix); “In the City” Season 1 (Peacock); “Mating Season” Season 1 (Netflix)
