The driver, who was heading south in the northbound lanes on Route 1, died at the scene, police say.
A state trooper has died after his cruiser was struck on Route 1 in Lynnfield by a wrong-way driver early Wednesday, officials say.
The trooper was among several officers who responded around 2 a.m. to reports of a gray Jeep heading south in the northbound lanes, The Boston Globe reported, citing police and Broadcastify recordings. The two vehicles then collided head on.
The driver, whose identity hasn’t been released, died at the scene, police said.
The injured trooper was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital by ambulance, according to the Globe. He died later in the morning, police announced at 9:15 a.m.

Authorities have not released the trooper’s identity. More information is expected to come in a Wednesday press conference.
Following the trooper’s passing, Gov. Maura Healey released a statement recognizing his bravery.
“This act of service and courage is what our State Police are called to do every day,” she said, noting he “put himself in harm’s way to protect others.” “They show up ready to face danger so the rest of us can be safe. Today, Massachusetts is mourning one of those heroes.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the Trooper’s family, loved ones, and with fellow members of the State Police during this incredibly difficult time,” Healey continued.
