A Somerville bakery known for its croissants just earned some national recognition.

Michette was named one of the 14 best French bakeries in the U.S. by Tasting Table, placing the Union Square bakery alongside acclaimed pastry destinations in New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and other food cities across the country.

The food publication said it selected bakeries serving the kinds of traditional pastries and breads found throughout France. According to Tasting Table, the strongest contenders were bakeries with award-winning credentials, run by those who have lived or trained in France, and devoted followings “willing to travel for some sweet, sweet pastries.”

In highlighting Michette, Tasting Table pointed to the twice-baked croissants, calling the Somerville shop one of the places “raising the bar” around Boston.

The publication noted that fans describe Michette’s croissants as having “somewhere in the neighborhood of a million layers.” The site also noted that some customers consider the bakery not just one of the best bakeries in the city or state, but in the country.

Michette has built a loyal following for French-style pastries that balance classic technique with creative flavors. Its menu changes, but the bakery is known for laminated pastries, croissants, cookies, and seasonal offerings.

Other bakeries on the list included Dominique Ansel Bakery in New York, République in Los Angeles, and Bellegarde Bakery in New Orleans.
