Investigators believe an overheated bearing likely caused a fire aboard an MBTA ferry on Monday, which prompted the evacuation of 25 passengers, the agency said.

The Champion MBTA ferry was making its scheduled 2 p.m. trip from Hingham to Long Wharf when a small fire was discovered in the machinery area of the vessel, the MBTA said in a statement.

A preliminary investigation suggests a bearing became overheated which sparked a fire on the outside of the bearing casing, the agency said, adding that the investigation is ongoing.

“In collaboration with the US Coast Guard, the final investigation, reviews, and any corrective action plans are still taking place and being developed,” a MBTA spokesperson said. 

The fire was quickly put out and there were no injuries, according to the MBTA.

Passengers were picked up by an MBTA bus and taken to Long Wharf and the Aquarium MBTA station, the agency said.

“The MBTA also appreciates first responders from Boston Fire and Massport Fire for their work during this incident,” the agency added.
