NESN is suddenly looking for a chief operating officer.

Matt Volk, who joined NESN in January 2023, is leaving for a newly created role with the NBA and WNBA, where he and his team will be in charge of the leagues’ local media business. His first day is June 22.

“I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Matt over the past two years, as we’ve pushed NESN into its next chapter,” said NESN president and CEO David Wisnia in a statement.

“His friendship and partnership have been instrumental during a period of real transformation, as he’s helped us modernize our approach, strengthen operations, and position the business for what’s next.

“While I’m sad to see him leave, I wish him nothing but the best in his next adventure and have no doubt that he’ll make us proud.”

Volk, a Bowdoin College graduate and the son of former Celtics general manager Jan Volk, came to NESN from Audacy. Among his previous stops was ESPN, where his duties included involvement in NBA and WNBA programming.

When asked how the network would approach replacing Volk, a spokesperson said, “We’re taking our time to evaluate the needs of the business, and how to best fill those needs.”

Volk’s new role with the NBA is an important one. Thirteen NBA teams, including the Thunder, Cavaliers, and Spurs, are without a home for local game broadcasts entering the 2026-27 season. Main Street Sports Group, the parent of FanDuel Sports Networks, owned those local rights.

The company, formerly known as Diamond Sports Group, ceased operations at the end of the NBA and NHL seasons. The NBA is aiming to launch its own streaming package of regional broadcasts for the 2027-28 season.
