Rafaela has been worth every bit of his 8-year, $50 million contract.
For all the talk about how much money Brayan Bello and Kristian Campbell are making to play in Worcester, Ceddanne Rafaela is a great example of why signing players early can be well worth the risk.
Rafaela and the Red Sox agreed to an 8-year, $50 million contract extension back in April 2024, and he has steadily improved in every season since. Despite having to switch positions multiple times and see some time as a utility player off the bench, the young outfielder has progressed both offensively and defensively, turning himself into one of Boston’s best all-around players in 2026.
On Saturday, Rafaela hit a clutch single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning that drove home two runs and gave the Red Sox a lead.
“I always want to be in those moments, to help my team out, it feels good to be able to help them out,” Rafaela said postgame. “Every win matters, especially at home, we want the fans to be happy.”
Fellow outfielder Jarren Duran had plenty of confidence in Rafaela to get them a clutch hit.
“I’m never worried when it’s him,” Duran said of the RBI knock. “There’s nobody else I want up at the plate right now. In any situation where we need to come up clutch or something like that, he’s the guy, he’s got literally ice in his veins.
“He was born for these moments.”
The fans certainly have been happy with Rafaela lately. He has 8 RBIs in his last three games, and five hits in two games against the Rangers, including a home run.
He’s already shown Gold Glove capability throughout the years, but his offensive game was a bit of a late bloomer. In 2024, he had a .246 batting average with a .664 OPS. In 2025 he was only slightly better: .249 batting average with a .708 OPS.
But in 2026, he has improved significantly. He’s batting .287 with a .457 slugging and an .801 OPS. He also has seven home runs already, nearly halfway towards matching his season-high 16 home runs from 2025.
At an average salary of just $6.25 million per season, Rafaela has proven he can be a valuable starting center fielder in the MLB. His deal was initially a risk, as he was a very unproven prospect with less than 30 major league games under his belt when he inked the contract.
But Rafaela has been worth every penny thus far, and his confidence at the plate in particular is one of the brighter spots of the Red Sox’s gloomy 2026 season.
