The mother and son were both found dead in their home, and the son appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound to the head, officials said.

Authorities in New Hampshire are investigating the deaths of a mother and son in what they said appears to be a murder-suicide.

At about 9 a.m. Tuesday, Dover police responded to a home on Dover Point Road to conduct a follow-up welfare check on the residents, New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella and Dover Police Chief David Terlemezian said in a press release. Inside, they found the bodies of Eileen Shevelin, 78, and her son, Thomas Wallace, 57.

Shevelin was found dead in her bed, and Wallace appeared to have suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head, authorities said. Detectives are now investigating the incident as a possible murder-suicide.

The mother and son’s autopsies will be conducted Wednesday at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Concord, N.H., according to Formella. The investigation is ongoing, but there is no threat to the public at this time, officials said.
