Authorities are investigating after a Cape Cod middle school student allegedly made a “specific” threat against two classmates, according to police and school officials.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Sandwich police said they are investigating an incident involving a student at Sandwich Middle High School, in collaboration with school officials and the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office.

“Appropriate actions have been taken to ensure the safety of students, staff, and community members,” police said.

Investigators did not release details about the alleged threats or identify the student because those involved are juveniles. Police said they remain committed to ensuring “a safe and secure learning environment for all students in our community.”

In a letter sent to families on Tuesday, Sandwich Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Joseph P. Maruszczak said the families of the two students who were allegedly targeted have been notified and are working with authorities.

Maruszczak said the threat was discovered late last week after the district’s safety app, GoGuardian, flagged threatening language on a school-issued device and alerted administrators.

“Very rapidly, our School Resource Officer, along with the Sandwich Police Department, commenced an investigation,” Maruszczak said. “The student has not been in school since this incident, nor will the student be in school for the remaining days of the school year. We are grateful for our partnership with [the Sandwich Police Department] and their quick action to ensure that all students and staff remain safe.”

The incident remains under investigation by the Sandwich Police Department and the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office, according to school officials and police.
