Boston Dynamics is preparing for a major expansion in Greater Boston, transforming a 300,000-plus-square-foot facility in Waltham into an advanced robotics and artificial intelligence center as it looks to nearly double its workforce.

In an announcement on Wednesday, the company said that it plans to invest $100 million into the project and anticipates creating 1,250 new jobs by 2033. According to PitchBook, the privately held company currently employs around 1,300 people.

“Boston Dynamics has called Waltham home for many years, and this expansion is a reflection of how fast our industry is moving,” said Amanda McMaster, interim CEO of Boston Dynamics, in a statement.

She added that the investment will allow the company to launch its third robot platform this decade.

The new facility at 1601 Trapelo Road is located near Boston Dynamics’ existing headquarters and is approximately 12 miles outside of Boston.

The new building will consolidate operations housed at three nearby locations and expand the company’s capabilities in advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, workforce training, and research and development.

Boston Dynamics is best known for its agile, animal-inspired, and humanoid robots, such as Spot and Atlas

The Healey-Driscoll Administration awarded Boston Dynamics a $25 million award to help support the expansion.

“This investment will create good jobs, strengthen our advanced manufacturing ecosystem, and ensure Massachusetts remains a global leader in robotics,” said Gov. Maura Healey in a statement.

Boston Dynamics, which the Hyundai Motor Group owns, expects to move into the new facility in phases beginning in mid-2027. The project is being developed in partnership with real estate investment firm BXP, which has owned the property since 1998.
