“Boston, you’ve embraced us like long-lost cousins who turned up unannounced, drank all your beer, decorated your statues, and somehow remained welcome.”

After charming Bostonians and annexing the city amid Scotland’s World Cup campaign, the Tartan Army has paid homage to Beantown with a full-page ad in The Herald (no, not that one).
“Dear Boston, thank you for welcoming us with open arms, open bars and open minds,” the ad in The Herald, a Scottish newspaper, begins.

Borrowing the format of a similar ad that ran in The Boston Globe Sunday, the Tartan Army then goes on to praise locals who made Scottish soccer fans feel at home during their nearly two-week stay.
“Your residents, bartenders, baseball stadiums, law enforcement and everyone else have been so kind to us from the moment we arrived until it was time to part company,” the ad continues.
“Boston, you’ve embraced us like long-lost cousins who turned up unannounced, drank all your beer, decorated your statues, and somehow remained welcome,” the Tartan Army teased. “You all are welcome back to ours to keep this party going.”
As The Herald noted in a separate article, the Tartan Army “made a hugely positive impression” during their stay in Boston, “attending Boston Red Sox matches at Fenway Park, donating to charitable causes and decorating the city’s statues with traffic cones.” Mayor Michelle Wu even signed a letter of intent last week to pair Boston and Glasgow as “sister cities” beginning next year, while New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft has floated the idea of the Patriots playing an NFL game across the pond in Scotland.
“You came for the World Cup, but gave us something more,” the Globe explained in its ad thanking the Tartan Army. “You turned train stations into singalongs, Fenway into a football ground, and an ordinary June into something we’ll be talking about for years.”
The Tartan Army responded in kind, writing, “Stories will be told down through future generations in Boston and in Scotland. Until next time Boston: No Scotland, No Party.”
