After Walgreens closed multiple stores in Roxbury, it's gone without a chain pharmacy for years.

A new CVS Pharmacy will open in Nubian Square in July, bringing back a chain drugstore after Walgreens closed multiple stores in Roxbury. 

CVS Pharmacy confirmed that the new store at 32 Warren St. will open in July. A spokesperson said the pharmacy giant will have more details to share then and declined to comment on why they are opening at this location. 

There is an independently owned pharmacy, Kornfield Pharmacy, at the other end of Nubian Square.

In late 2022, Walgreens shuttered three pharmacies in Roxbury, Hyde Park, and Mattapan. One of the locations was just steps away from the new CVS at 2275 Washington St. 

Then, in 2024, Walgreens closed down another Roxbury location at 416 Warren St., sparking protests from residents. The closures made it difficult for residents to access pharmacies, many of which were over 20 minutes away on foot. 

In April, the Boston City Council said it would examine a proposal to create a pharmacy stabilization and access fund to help residents maintain access to medications and vaccines in their neighborhoods, as more chain drugstores pull out of Boston. It remains in committee. 

“I have seen firsthand when a neighborhood pharmacy packs up and leaves,” said City Councilor Miniard Culpepper at the council meeting. “For many of our residents, especially seniors, working families, and those without reliable transportation, that loss is devastating.” 

Culpepper represents District 7, which includes the Roxbury neighborhood. 

At-large City Councilor Julia Mejia said at the hearing that since 2019, Boston has lost 41 pharmacies, many of them large commercial chains. The proposed fund will only help independent or non-profit-based pharmacies. 

“A pharmacy is not just a place to pick up prescriptions, but it is a lifeline for medications, vaccinations, and trusted healthcare guidance,” Culpepper said. “When that access disappears, entire communities are left behind.”
