One child died and another was seriously injured Thursday in Haverhill after a bus collided with the motorized scooter they were riding, authorities said.

Officers received a report of the crash just before 4 p.m. They responded to the intersection of Portland Street and 5th Avenue, where they found two children suffering serious injuries, the Haverhill Police Department said in a statement.

The children were transported to a local hospital for treatment. One of the children, a 12-year-old girl from Haverhill, was later pronounced dead, Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker’s office said Friday.

The girl’s identity was not immediately released, as family notifications are pending. She was a student in the Haverhill public schools system, according to Tucker’s office. Superintendent Margaret Marotta did not immediately return a request for comment.

State police and Haverhill police are continuing to investigate.

The intersection was closed to traffic for a substantial part of Thursday evening.

After several high profile incidents around Massachusetts, Gov. Maura Healey filed legislation last month that seeks to better regulate “micromobility devices” like e-bikes, scooters, and mopeds.
