City inspectors found widespread rodent droppings throughout the food hall, leading to multiple violations and an immediate closure.

The main dining facility at Wentworth Institute of Technology shut down after city inspectors found a widespread rodent infestation, officials said. 

Boston city inspectors visited Beatty Hall on Tuesday after a resident called the inspectional department regarding a sighting of mice in the food court. 

According to the Inspectional Service Report, the inspector found several violations related to pests. Mice droppings and nesting materials were found along booths near the windows, near the main cookline, behind bakery storage racks, and under dry food storage bins. 

Inspectors also found a dead cockroach in a cabinet in the gluten-free kitchen. 

The failed inspection report came only a week after the city graded the food establishment an “A” on April 27. The only violation cited at the time was a leaking part on a dishwashing machine. 

However, multiple violations, including some with rodent droppings, date back to September 2024 on the city’s website. 

“We are moving quickly to address every item in the inspection report, including structural repairs, pest management protocol improvements, and enhanced cleaning standards,” Wentworth Institute said in a statement. “We will reopen the dining facility only when we are confident all issues have been fully and properly resolved.”

As of Thursday afternoon, the school said it is still working through the issues and anticipates a re-inspection early next week. 

Wentworth Institute of Technology operates on a three-term academic calendar. The summer semester began on Tuesday, May 5.
