Relatives are remembering 32-year-old Mabinty Janneh for her “beautiful soul” as newly available footage shows the Dorchester woman trying in vain to run from the carjacking suspect who allegedly struck and killed her in Mattapan Saturday.
“Her life was tragically taken far too soon, leaving our family heartbroken and struggling to come to terms with this unimaginable loss,” Janneh’s relatives wrote in a GoFundMe to help cover her funeral expenses.
Prosecutors allege Ibraim Matos, 37, of Hyde Park, was driving a stolen car when he jumped the curb and sped down the sidewalk along Blue Hill Avenue in Mattapan Saturday afternoon.
Surveillance footage obtained by Boston 25 News appears to show Matos carjacking a woman outside a Mattapan car wash before getting behind the wheel and driving the wrong way down Blue Hill Avenue toward Mattapan Square. In additional video published by WCVB, Janneh and other pedestrians can be seen running for cover as the SUV hurtles down the sidewalk.

Prosecutors say Janneh was struck and dragged “several hundred feet.” She was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.
Matos has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, carjacking, leaving the scene of personal injury, leaving the scene of personal injury and death, and motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation. He was held without bail Monday and ordered to undergo an evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital ahead of his next court date July 10.
In the meantime, Janneh’s relatives say they are “committed to seeking justice for Mabinty and ensuring that her life is honored and remembered,” according to the GoFundMe.
“She deserved so much more, and we will continue to fight for her voice to be heard,” the family added.
The GoFundMe had raised just shy of $4,500 as of Tuesday afternoon.
“Mabinty was a beautiful soul whose kindness, love, and hardworking spirit touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing her,” her family wrote. “She was a devoted family member, a loyal friend, and someone who always put others before herself.”
