Francisco Soares, of Foxborough, took thousands of dollars from victims during alleged scam, authorities say.

A Foxborough man is facing new charges for allegedly posing as a federal immigration officer to defraud immigrants, authorities said.

Francisco Soares, 56, was arrested April 30, according to a statement from Massachusetts U.S. Attorney Leah Foley’s office.

According to the criminal complaint, Soares told multiple Brazilian nationals that he worked for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and could help secure their citizenship “for a price.”

Soares, who has never been a federal employee, is accused of taking thousands of dollars from his alleged victims, Foley’s office said.

This is not Soares’ first offense. He was convicted a decade ago, in 2015, for impersonating a federal officer.

In that previous case, prosecutors said Soares, claiming to work for ICE, offered to clean immigrants’ records and provide a green card in exchange for up to $10,500.

He was sentenced to three years of probation, 12 months of home confinement, and ordered to pay a $5,000 fine along with $4,300 in restitution.

Following an appearance in Boston federal court Friday for the new case, Soares was released on conditions. If convicted of the current charge, he faces a sentence of up to three years in prison, Foley’s office said.
