One person reportedly died and another was hospitalized with gunshot wounds after a car rammed into a hotel in Sturbridge, according to police officials, media reports, and dispatch recordings. 

At about 12:55 a.m. Thursday, Sturbridge police and State Police responded to the Sturbridge Plaza Hotel at 400 Haynes St. for reports of an active shooter. 

Just after 1 a.m., first responders reported that the shooter was “down” and that one other person was bleeding from gunshot wounds. A few minutes later, reports came in that one person suffered gunshot wounds to the leg and chest, and another had a gunshot wound to the head, according to dispatch recordings from Broadcastify. 

At about 1:20 a.m., first responders reported that one victim was being transported to Harrington Hospital in Southbridge. An ambulance was taking that patient to a Life Flight helicopter for transportation to the hospital. 

The other person was reported as “DOA,” according to dispatch recordings. An ambulance and helicopter that were en route for that person were canceled. 

As of mid-morning Thursday, officials have not confirmed that a person died in the incident. Sturbridge police referred requests for information to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office. That office could not be reached for comment.

Just after 1:30 a.m., EMTs on their way to the helicopter reported that they had one patient, an approximately 50-year-old man who was conscious and alert with a gunshot wound to his left flank. He arrived at the hospital by 1:44 a.m., according to the recordings. 

Officials could later be heard saying that a building inspector was on their way to the hotel around 2 a.m. 

Footage taken by WCVB Thursday morning showed a black SUV that appeared to have crashed into the side of the building. The station also reported that a van from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was seen at the crime scene early Thursday morning. 

Footage from Spectrum News 1 Worcester showed a gaping hole left in the building after the SUV had been removed. 

In a brief statement posted online just before 6 a.m., Sturbridge Police Chief Earl Dessert said that the incident was being investigated by local police, State Police, and the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office. 

There is no ongoing threat to the public, Dessert wrote. A more detailed press release will be issued later Thursday. 

“We ask the public to avoid speculation and allow investigators the time necessary to conduct a thorough and complete investigation,” Dessert wrote.
