Leverage Horizon 8 Term licenses to deploy VDI and apps i...
Riley Bui · 2025-08-16 · via Omnissa

Until recently, Horizon 8 customers who purchased Horizon Term licenses were limited to deploying VDI and published apps in only on-premises locations. To provide more flexibility, we are happy to share that Horizon Term customers can now deploy their Horizon 8 virtual desktops and apps anywhere in the public cloud of their choice, either using VMware vSphere (with a service such as Azure VMware Solution or Google Cloud VMware Engine), or supported native cloud/non-vSphere environments (for example, Amazon Workspaces Core). With this added flexibility you can decide whether you want to scale in the cloud, maintain on-premises control, or adopt a hybrid approach.

Why use Term in the cloud? Let’s dive in.

Leverage hosted infrastructure with hybrid or multi-cloud solutions

Horizon Enterprise Term and Horizon Apps Advanced Term customers can now deploy Horizon 8 virtual desktops and apps in hybrid or multi-cloud environments, just like Horizon Universal Subscription customers. You can leverage Horizon 8 Cloud Pod Architecture (CPA) to build a hybrid cloud solution with on-premises capacity and cloud-based capacity for use cases like High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR). Not only do hybrid and multi-cloud solutions enable HA/DR but also cloud bursting and portability. Portability of licenses allows the same license to be deployed in two locations, whether it is on-premises or public cloud.

Supporting single-cloud options to meet your requirements

Horizon Apps Standard Term, Horizon Standard Term, and Horizon Advanced Term customers can deploy their Horizon 8 virtual desktops and apps within a single cloud deployment, whether on-premises or the public cloud. Before, these customers were just limited to on-premises. Public cloud deployment offers you the choice of using hosted capacity instead of managing on-premises capacity, streamlining infrastructure management.

Flexibility and choice

This new flexibility lets you deploy Horizon 8 in the cloud of your choice using a Term License, whether it’s Amazon, Google, Azure, or even within your country’s borders with no changes in pricing or SKUs. Horizon 8 supports various public clouds, including Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and several vSphere-based clouds like Google Cloud VMware Engine, VMware Cloud on AWS, Azure VMware Solution, Oracle Cloud VMware Solution and more.

What about SaaS subscriptions?

Horizon SaaS subscriptions continue to be a great choice for those customers who want the license portability between Horizon 8 and Horizon Cloud DaaS deployment. Horizon 8 customers who want to leverage the SaaS services on the Horizon Control Plane have access to SaaS services such as Image Management Service (IMS) and Omnissa Intelligence for Horizon. Please note SaaS customers have to connect to the cloud-hosted Horizon Control Plane within 90 days of receiving their welcome email that their tenant is provisioned. Horizon Term environments do not need to connect to the Horizon Control Plane. Lastly, with the Horizon SaaS subscriptions, there is no license key. Horizon Term has a license key.

In short, the cloud just got a whole lot more accessible for Horizon Term customers, bringing more flexibility and options for deployments. For a reference between various Horizon Term options we provide, refer to this feature comparison matrix
