Based on my extensive hands-on testing and expert input, I’ve picked the best sexting apps to keep your flirtiest, dirtiest chats truly private — whether you're messaging a partner, a hookup, or a verified creator.

Because sometimes the anticipation of a hookup is even hotter than the main event. In my experience, sexting is the ultimate form of digital foreplay. It’s the glue that keeps long-distance relationships from falling apart, the spark that stops long-term couples from feeling like roommates, and — for all you singles out there — the safest way to test sexual chemistry before you ever meet up in person.

If it feels like everyone is sending spicy texts these days, you're not wrong. Some studies show that up to 88 percent of American adults have engaged in sexting at some point in their lives. For many, it's become an essential means of connection, and research shows that sharing intimate pictures can evoke, demonstrate, and reinforce trust.

You've heard of safe sex. But what about safe sexting?

Remember: You can't (and shouldn't!) trust your most intimate moments to just any app. As fun as the buildup is, the sad truth is that no one ever knows for sure if their private photos will stay private once they hit send on standard messaging platforms. Sliding into the DMs on a random dating app might feel like spontaneous fun, but in 2026, your digital footprint is forever. If you're going to share that side of yourself, you need to know it stays between you and the recipient.

As one of Mashable's dating app experts, I've spent the last three years testing dozens of platforms to find the best and most discreet apps for the job. My highest priority is always user safety. I also spoke with security expert Gary Orenstein with Bitwarden, who stressed that for sharing intimate content, "privacy features cannot be optional — they’re essential." He recommends looking for apps with three key features: end-to-end encryption, disappearing messages, and screenshot detection.

After all, if you believe in safe sex, you should practice safe sexting, too. So, for all your NSFW messaging needs, these are the sexting apps I trust to get the job done without compromising your privacy.

Our Pick

Hand holding phone with Confide logo against abstract background

  • "ScreenShield technology" prevents anyone from taking screenshots
  • Messages are end-to-end encrypted and self-destruct after being read
  • Extra privacy features, like hidden usernames and line-by-line reading
  • Chats are deleted permanently, so you can't reread conversations
  • The high-security features can feel a bit clunky and may interrupt the flow

Confide is the safest app for swapping nudes, period. So, if you're serious about privacy and sexting, I think it's the best sexting app overall in 2026. (Yes, Snapchat makes your nudes look ultra-filtered, and Signal is free, but Confide has way more security features.) There's a reason it's the go-to secure messaging app for executives, paranoid politicians, and other professionals in sensitive industries — and people who crave flirty, off-the-record chats.

Fun fact: Confide is the IRL version of the Evanesce app that Joe Goldberg used in Season 4 of You, according to The Tab. So, if it's good enough to scare a serial killer, it's probably good enough to keep your intimate conversations secure.

With end-to-end encryption, self-destructing messages, and both an app and desktop version, your secrets are locked up tight. There's no screenshotting or forwarding, and messages are automatically deleted from both users' devices after they're read.

Confide's core feature is its "no screenshot" guarantee. Thanks to its innovative "ScreenShield technology," every message sent or received on Confide can only be viewed one line at a time. I had an easy time using Confide during our testing process, and our colleagues at PCMag gave it an "excellent" rating in a recent review.

To read, users either run their finger or mouse over the message line by line until they have read the entire thing (lines disappear immediately after they're read). Additionally, Confide takes extra measures to ensure your privacy by never displaying a user's name on the same screen as the message.

While the excessive security measures keep your messages and images private, they may be a distraction from spontaneous and sexy fun. If you want to be able to revisit your steamy chat history again and again, then I recommend using an app like Signal instead.

  • Free to use and one of the most popular apps for sending photos
  • Tons of filters and creative tools to enhance your snaps
  • Features disappearing messages and screenshot notifications
  • Not ideal if privacy is your top concern, due to past security issues
  • Screenshot notifications are not foolproof
  • High risk of human error, like accidentally posting to your public Story

Looking for free sexting apps you don't have to pay for? Snapchat is the OG app for disappearing photos, making it the go-to for anyone who wants to add high-production value to their nudes without leaving a permanent paper trail. With an endless library of filters and lenses, it’s ideal for "zhuzhing" up your thirst traps with a cinematic look that other secure apps (like Signal) just can't match.

Just remember: Snapchat is not a dedicated 18+ adult platform. Minors also use the app, so you should be extremely cautious about who you're interacting with.

Snapchat has a massive user base, with more than 946 million monthly active users as of Q4 2025. You don't have to pay to swap sexy messages on this app, but the company is doubling down on paid tiers. In February 2026, they launched "Creator Subscriptions" to let users pay for exclusive Snaps and priority replies from their favorite Snap Stars. They also introduced "Lens+," a premium feature that gives users access to "AI Clips." This new AI-powered format turns a still photo into a five-second cinematic video using a closed-prompt system.

You can send anything you want (naughty images, sexy voice messages, or a private text message), and it'll vanish as soon as the recipient opens it. Users can choose a time limit of one to 10 seconds or the "infinity" option. And, like some of the other apps on this list, Snapchat sends screenshot notifications, so you can send bae a brief glimpse of the goods without worrying if they’re secretly saving it.

Because Snapchat doesn't have a public feed or "dating" search, finding partners can be tough. The most effective workaround is to use niche communities like r/ShareSnapchat or r/DirtySnapchat as a directory to find usernames.

Once you move to Snap, don't lead with a nude. Ask for a quick voice memo or check their post history first. This is the best way to verify you're talking to a real person and not a bot or a seller.

Hand holding phone with Signal logo against abstract background

  • Totally free to use with no ads
  • All messages are end-to-end encrypted
  • Disappearing messages and 24-hour "Stories"
  • Username option allows for more anonymity
  • Requires a real phone number to sign up
  • Not designed for finding new sexting partners
  • No screenshot protection

Signal is the best sexting app for most people, and it was a favorite among the experts I spoke with. This encrypted messaging app isn’t a place to find new sexting buddies, but it is a great app for discreetly chatting with people you already know and trust. (Our sister site PCMag ranked it the No. 1 secure messaging app.)

Suzannah Weiss, a sex therapist and resident sexologist for Fleshy, recommends Signal for users who are "concerned about hackers or leaks," noting that it prevents advertisers and government agencies from eavesdropping on your messages.

One of the coolest things about this app is that its open-source code is publicly available for anyone to view, so you know they aren’t reading your messages. There’s no data collection, no ads, and no affiliate marketers. “Signal stands out for its open-source design, minimal metadata retention, and built-in privacy features such as disappearing messages and screen security,” says Orenstein.

However, it's worth noting that Signal has recently been in the headlines. In January 2026, FBI Director Kash Patel announced an investigation into Signal chats used by Minnesota residents regarding ICE movements. While Signal's end-to-end encryption means the content of your messages remains secure (Signal can't read them, so they can't hand them over), this news highlights that the app is under increased government scrutiny.

You can share images, text, or video “Stories” that disappear after 24 hours or set a custom timer for messages to disappear. You can also turn off the “Stories” feature, which is a huge plus. (I deleted Snapchat solely because I was scared that the saucy photos I sent to my partner would accidentally end up on my Story.)

And, if you’re a faster typist than texter, there’s a desktop version available for Mac that lets you link devices so you can auto-transfer your recent chat and media history. This way, you don't have to start your conversations from scratch. Plus, the “Screen Security” feature, which is enabled by default on the Windows 11 desktop app, prevents screenshots of your chats for an extra layer of security. (You can disable it in the app's privacy settings, if you need to.)

While Signal does require a real phone number at sign-up, it’s not visible to just anyone (unless you want it to be). You can set up a unique username and adjust your privacy settings so people can't find you by your phone number, so you can connect with new people and remain anonymous.

Hand holding phone with SextPanther logo against abstract background

  • Connects you with professional adult performers for a guaranteed sexting partner
  • It's easy to search for performers based on your specific interests and kinks
  • You can send texts, photos, and audio messages, or use the video chat feature
  • The optional TEXTPanther app makes sexting on your phone more convenient
  • It’s a pay-per-message service that can get expensive quickly
  • The site primarily caters to straight men at this time

If you've ever dreamed of exchanging sexy messages, photos, or videos with your favorite adult performers or cam models, then you need to know about SextPanther. The sexting platform connects you with real adult stars for paid, one-on-one chats directly on the SextPanther website. Sadly, due to the prudish rules of the app stores, there's no true SextPanther app, but SextPanther has an optional companion app called TEXTPanther.

Paid sexting may not be what you had in mind, but the direct, on-demand nature of the app will appeal to many users. There's no awkward small talk or the inescapable bots you find on most NSFW dating sites and cam sites. Instead, you can have sexy conversations with real models.

If you don't have a long-distance partner to sync up with, a professional sexting service is another (reliable) way to explore your fantasies. Unlike sliding into DMs and hoping for the best, SextPanther guarantees a connection with an adult performer who's ready to chat.

How does SextPanther work? You select a model you want to chat with, and when they're online, start a conversation. You can exchange messages by text, but also by voice and video. "You pay a set price — usually a dollar or two — for each sext that you send a sex worker on the app," says Weiss. It's similar in concept to OnlyFans, except instead of a monthly subscription, SextPanther lets you pay to send and receive messages from adult performers, dommes, and kinky companions.

The site has even attracted some well-known names in the porn world, meaning you can turn your fantasies into reality. SextPanther lets performers set their own chat rates. So, when you find someone you want to chat with, you will see prices for text messages, audio notes, pictures, and video chats. If the performer is online, you can start sexting right away.

Some users will appreciate the transactional nature of SextPanther. With this app, you know exactly what you're getting. The site has had security challenges in the past (some performer information was left vulnerable, though no user data was compromised), its recent popularity and the sheer number of models available make it, in my opinion, the best professional chat service of its kind.

pure dating app logo against a bright green phone screen.

Pure

Best for adventurous voice chats

  • "Devil's Bones" feature connects you with random users for voice or text chat
  • Total anonymity with no name required and self-destructing chats.
  • "True Photo" request helps verify users in real-time
  • Completely free for women to use
  • The user base may be smaller in less populated areas
  • Subscription for men is relatively expensive

Read our full review of Pure.

Pure is the place to be if you're looking for witty, steamy conversations or just some super-hot phone sex with a stranger. The entire experience is built around anonymity (the app never even asks for your name), making it easier to connect with others without the pressure of exposing your public identity.

This "unfiltered" approach is clearly working; while mainstream apps are struggling to keep users engaged, Pure recently hit $100 million in revenue with a 95 percent jump in registrations.

I picked Pure specifically for its "Devil's Bones" feature, which makes it a top choice for adventurous voice chats. This feature lets you roll the dice and instantly join a random voice or text chat with a complete stranger, something that only works in a setting where no one knows who you are. During my four weeks of testing, I received several steamy voice messages, and the conversations were leagues above what I've found on other apps.

In April, Pure rolled out a complete redesign of the feed. They've moved away from the old-school grid to show you one profile at a time, so you can focus on the person in front of you. Your "turn-ons" are now front and center, and a new "Mutual Turn-Ons" feature gives a quick view of potential partners' interests.

All chats still self-destruct in 24 hours, and photos disappear right after they're seen. The app even blocks screenshots and notifies you if someone tries to take one. While anonymity can be a concern, Pure lets you send "True Photo" requests to confirm you're not talking to a bot or catfisher. It’s a smart, secure way to explore your wilder side.

Hand holding phone with Tinder logo against abstract background

  • Massive, diverse user base means endless options for connections
  • User-friendly interface is fast and easy to navigate
  • Strong focus on LGBTQ+ users, with 30% of matches being between queer users
  • The free version is loaded with ads and has limited functionality
  • Doesn't have a screenshot notification feature
  • Known for having fake profiles and bots

Read our full review of Tinder Platinum.

Tinder isn't a dedicated sexting app; it is the OG swiping app known for its relaxed, hookup-friendly atmosphere. It's the go-to hookup app for anyone interested in online dating or casual sex without the heavy pressure of commitment.

That said, CEO Spencer Rascoff just announced that he's prioritizing investments to attract more women to the platform to reach "gender parity." Part of this shift includes moving away from its strict "hookup reputation" to better attract Gen Z users who want more intentional outcomes. Just be aware: Because Tinder is such a massive, mainstream app, you risk running into mismatched expectations. The person you match with might be looking for a real relationship, not just a sexting partner.

You might think of Tinder as just a hookup app, but it's secretly one of the best platforms for sexting. The proof? A survey found that 70 percent of its users never meet their matches in person. (The fact that it's also one of our favorite free dating apps doesn't hurt either.) And since it's the pioneer of "swipe right," the whole experience is designed to be quick and easy, so you can skip the boring profiles and get straight to the DMs.

The app is also constantly rolling out new features. The redesigned "Music Mode" now prioritizes profiles with shared musical tastes, while the brand-new "Astrology Mode" lets you add your birth data to see Sun, Moon, and Rising sign compatibility. For those looking to take things offline, a new "Events" tab is being piloted in Los Angeles, listing local IRL happenings like pottery classes or trivia nights where you can meet up in person.

Safety-wise, Tinder is getting much more serious. In March 2026, the app expanded its mandatory facial recognition scans ("Face Check") to the UK, following its successful 2025 rollout in the U.S. New members must take a video selfie, which the app scans to check for a match with their profile photos and to detect if they are running multiple accounts. The platform is also giving its existing safety tools an AI-powered upgrade. The "Are You Sure?" feature is "being fine-tuned" to detect harmful language before you hit send, and "Does This Bother You?" will soon automatically blur potentially disrespectful or offensive messages.

Tinder has also made it clear that its hookup-friendly vibe is for everyone, reporting that a massive 30 percent of all its matches are between LGBTQ+ users. While the free version gets you swiping, you'll need to spring for a paid account to get the most out of it.

Hand holding phone with DUST logo against abstract background

DUST

Best for anonymity

  • Free to use with no personal info required to sign up
  • Messages self-destruct in 24 hours (or instantly if you manually "dust" them)
  • Username is hidden from the chat screen for extra anonymity
  • Screenshot protection only works on Android, not on iOS
  • Unread messages are still deleted after 24 hours

What is DUST? It's like Snapchat with encryption. This app is easily one of the top options for message security and privacy. Backed by billionaire investor Mark Cuban, the app protects your chats with end-to-end encryption, self-destructing messages, and anonymous messaging.

While it may not be marketed as a sexting app, the fact that DUST keeps you anonymous and automatically scrubs your messages makes it ideal for anyone who wants to send explicit images or texts without leaving a trace.

Some people enjoy scrolling back and reliving steamy conversations, but if you want all of your messages to self-destruct, then consider DUST. Messages vanish after 24 hours, no questions asked. Whether they've been read or not, they're history. And if you're worried about those late-night texts haunting you, DUST lets you erase messages from your device and your recipient's. As a security bonus, your username is never visible on the message screen. No self-identifying information is required to sign up, nor is anything permanently stored.

It's worth noting that DUST does prevent screenshots on Android devices in some areas of the app. However, for other operating systems, such as iOS, anyone can still capture and save what you send. Keep that in mind and exercise caution if you use an iOS device.

we-vibe logo on phone screen with illustrated background

  • Adds a physical dimension to a long-distance sexting session
  • Lets you and your partner control each other's sex toys from anywhere
  • Has interactive features like custom vibes and integrated video chat
  • Requires you to own compatible (and often pricey) We-Vibe toys
  • Like any Bluetooth device, you may run into connectivity issues

For long-distance couples who love to play with toys, We-Vibe can help close the gap between you, so to speak. App-controlled Bluetooth sex toys can add a whole new physical dimension to sexting. While there are tons of toy-connected apps out there (LELO, Satisfyer, and Lovesense, to name a few), Weiss recommends the We-Vibe app for couples interested in sexting.

The app lets you and your partner sync your We-Vibe toys from anywhere in the world (allowing one person to control the other's toy) with just a tap on your phone screen. You can also sext and video-chat directly in the app, so you can see your partner’s reaction in real-time. It’s a steamy solution for couples who want to make their long-distance intimacy feel a lot more up close and personal.

I picked the We-Vibe app as the best for long-distance because, unlike some other toy apps, it has a dedicated "Long Distance Play" mode. This feature is specifically designed to connect you with a partner anywhere in the world so you can hand over control of your toy. And it clearly works: According to the We-Vibe website, most long-distance couples who use the app agree that it made them feel closer to their partner, with 76 percent claiming that since they've been using the app, they've been more creative with where they have sex.

You can create your own custom vibe patterns, use "Touch Mode" to control the toy with a fingertip, and, of course, let your partner take over while you chat or video call for live feedback and reactions. How sexy is that? The only caveat is that you'll need to buy a We-Vibe toy to use all these cool features.

candy.ai logo on a phone screen on patterned background

  • Candy.ai lets you have realistic conversations with AI companions in an NSFW, sex-positive space
  • You can choose from a variety of AI partners, including anime-inspired options
  • You can create an AI partner and choose everything from their career to body type to specific turn-ons
  • Paid users can receive photos and voice messages from their virtual companions
  • Candy.ai doesn't have an app, but there is a mobile version of the desktop site
  • The premium membership options are expensive
  • There's limited functionality with the free plan (e.g., you have to pay to talk dirty or receive NSFW images)
  • Your AI companion may not satisfy your need for intimacy

Candy.ai is an AI sexting site, part of a fast-growing niche.

Candy.ai lets you create your own virtual AI companion for safe and non-judgmental fantasy-based interactions. So, if you're new to sexting and want to practice (or can't fathom talking dirty to a stranger), then candy.ai might be your best bet. Lots of people are now turning to AI avatars for roleplaying and erotica, and Candy.ai has hundreds of sexy personas you can chat with 24/7 (or, as the site's tagline says, "create your own AI girlfriend"). AI chatbots like ChatGPT could never.

Candy.ai is also ideal for anyone who is too shy or anxious to engage in NSFW conversations or share explicit content directly with another person.

Unlike its poorly designed competitors, which often produce awkward or nonsensical responses, Candy.ai's technology is advanced enough for you to have convincing chats with your AI companions.

This sexting site gives you the power to explore your fantasies however you want with your fantasy partner. You can create a virtual companion of your own, customizing the way they look, their career, and their sex drive. The only downside is that you'll need to upgrade to enjoy the best (and naughtiest) features. The premium membership is $19.99 per month (but there's usually a discount running, so it's really around $12.99), and with it you'll be able to listen to AI voice messages, make AI phone calls, remove the image blur (oh la la), and enjoy unlimited sexy text messages.

If you'd rather not waste time creating a character (or paying money to chat), you can choose from a selection of pre-designed virtual companions, including anime characters. It's free to start sexting with any of the models on the site, but additional features like receiving explicit photos or getting naughty voice messages will cost you extra.

  • Unique social features like "Control Links" and "Group Play" rooms
  • Lets you connect with a community of like-minded people, not just a single partner
  • The app itself is free to use
  • Great for exploring group sexting and teledildonics in a social setting
  • Requires you to own compatible Lovesense toys to get the full experience
  • Like any Bluetooth device, you may run into connectivity issues
  • Not designed for finding traditional dates or relationships

While We-Vibe is great for long-distance couples, Lovesense Remote is for when you want to make your sexting life a little more... open. It's the go-to app for people who are curious about teledildonics and want to connect with a more adventurous crowd, not just a single partner.

The app allows you to create a public "Control Link" that lets other users control your toy, or you can join "Group Play" rooms to share the experience with multiple people at once. It's a seriously steamy and interactive way to sext, whether you're playing solo, with a partner, or with a group of new friends.

I picked Lovesense as the best for group texting because its public and group-play features offer a unique way to connect and play in a whole new way. Of course, you’ll need a compatible toy to get the full experience, but the app itself is free. You can probably still sext without a toy, but it might not be as fulfilling.

“If you’re looking to sext instantly with an available person, one fun way to do that is to use a sex toy that connects to an app where you can sext with other users,” says Weiss. “Lovense, for instance, has an app that allows you to connect with other users so that you can sext while controlling each other’s toys, so it’s like you’re having virtual sex with them,” she adds. “You can also send photos, videos, and voice recordings, but you don’t have to.”

Other cool features of the Lovesense Remote app include Media Sync, where you can sync your toy’s vibrations to music or sounds; Game Mode, which offers a more interactive experience through the app; and Burn After Reading, a privacy-focused feature that lets you set photos and videos to self-destruct after they’re opened.

FetLife

Best for niche kinks & fetishes

  • A dedicated, established community for BDSM, fetish, and kink
  • Detailed profiles and groups make it easy to find people with specific interests
  • Invaluable resource for finding experienced partners and local events
  • Functions as a social network, which helps build trust
  • Supporter donation is very affordable for the features you get
  • Web-based platform with a dated interface
  • Feed is extremely NSFW and not blurred by default
  • Not a traditional dating app, so the focus isn't on quick matching

FetLife is for people whose sexting fantasies go way beyond the vanilla. It's a social network designed specifically for the BDSM, fetish, and kink communities. This web-based platform is ideal for anyone looking to connect with people who share their specific interests — whether it’s rope play, impact play, or something else entirely. While it’s not a sexting app (there’s a beta mobile app that you can download through the site, but it's not in the App Store), it’s an invaluable resource for finding partners who might be open to some virtual playtime.

Weiss also says it’s one of the best places for gamers to find a hookup, so there’s a high likelihood of connecting with people who appreciate interactive and imaginative digital engagements (aka the best sexting partner you could have).

I picked FetLife as the best app for exploring niche sexual interests because it’s the closest thing the kink community has to a social media site. There’s a feed full of kinky posts, an event calendar to help you find local munches, and discussion forums where you can voice your opinion in specific groups (e.g., “Kinky and Geeky,” “Novices & Newbies,” and “Under 35”).

But, just to be clear: the feed is extremely NSFW. Photos and videos are not blurred, so you will see everything from dick pics to full-on anal shots the moment you start scrolling. While the platform is free to use, you can get even more features by donating just $5 per month to support the platform. This gives you access to everything, including all 3,481,300+ videos, and the ability to customize your feed, add an “Ask Me Anything” on your profile, create unlimited albums, writing collections, community lists, and more. For five bucks, that’s a damn good deal.

Recent updates to this guide:

  • Confide: I’ve moved this back to the #1 spot. On balance, its specific privacy tools (like screenshot-proofing) just give it the edge over everything else right now.

  • Lovense Remote: I added this as the winner for "Group Sexting." It's also the best way for couples (and polyamorous folks) to sync Bluetooth toys for long-distance play.

  • FetLife: Added as "Best for Kink." It’s less of a standard app and more of a social network, but it remains the go-to place for finding niche communities.

What about other sexting sites?

You've probably seen other "best of" lists recommending apps I've left off. That's intentional. My goal is to recommend platforms where you can make connections, not just burn cash.

Here's why a few popular names didn't make the cut:

  • A note on "paid operator" sites: Many sites marketed for sexting (like InstaBang, Arousr, and SextLocal) don't primarily connect you with other real users. Instead, they often use "chat operators" to keep you talking and paying. While there's nothing wrong with a paid fantasy, I don't consider that mutual sexting. My list focuses on apps for real, user-to-user interaction (with the exception of SextPanther, which connects you with verified adult performers).

  • Couple's apps: You also won't find apps like Between on this list. While it's a private messenger for couples, it lacks the specific features that make sexting fun. If you want to level up your digital intimacy, my picks (like We-Vibe and Lovense) are much more interactive.

Frequently Asked Questions

My best advice is to focus on communication and safety. The golden rule is to always get consent before you send anything explicit; unsolicited pics are a major red flag and, on many platforms in 2026, can get your account auto-flagged by AI moderation. Once you have the green light, choose a platform that respects privacy (look for features like disappearing messages or screenshot protection). From there, it's about being clear on your own boundaries and respecting your partner's.

P.S. If you're sexting with someone new, keep your face and any other identifiable features (like tattoos) out of your pics to protect your privacy.

To keep your identity protected, I recommend removing all identifiable information before sharing nude photos. Here are a few key things to watch out for:

  • Strip your photos of location data and names before sending.

  • If you're using platforms like Snapchat or Reddit, verify the other person by checking their post history or asking for a quick voice memo to ensure they aren't a bot.

  • Keep your face, distinct tattoos, or anything in the background that could identify you in your sexts.

  • Never use a platform that asks for a credit card up front.

  • Choose your sexting partners carefully and stick to apps with robust privacy policies.

"Excessive permissions are the first major red flag," says Orenstein. “Apps used for sharing media should require access only to features like the camera or storage, and only while those features are in use,” he adds. “Requests for location data, full contact lists, or always-on microphone access are rarely justifiable and may indicate attempts to track or profile users.”

If the app’s privacy policy is difficult to understand or too vague, that’s another red flag. “Vague language about data retention, third-party sharing, or metadata logging (such as who communicates with whom and when) signals a lack of transparency,” Orenstein says. “Phrases like ‘for quality purposes’ or undefined storage durations should also prompt concern.”

Think of it this way: on a sexting app, the sexting is the main event. These platforms are designed for trading spicy messages and pics, often with no expectation of ever meeting up. On a hookup app, sexting is just the warm-up. The goal is to use that flirty chat to arrange a real-world, in-person hookup.

They can be, but in my experience, safety depends on both the app you choose and how you use it. The safest sexting apps are built with privacy in mind and have features like end-to-end encryption and self-destructing messages. However, the biggest factor is your own judgment. Always get consent, avoid sharing identifiable information with strangers, and trust your gut.

How we tested

Finding the best sexting app to keep your private chats private can be tricky. That's why I did the hard work for you. Here’s what I focused on:

  • Hands-on testing: I downloaded every app on this list, created profiles, and used the features — sending messages, sharing media, and testing video chats — to see if they felt glitchy or genuine.

  • User experience (UX): I focused on what matters when you're in the moment: Is the app easy to use? Is it visually appealing? And, most importantly, does it kill the mood with too many ads or paywalls?

  • Expert & user insights: I cross-referenced my findings with app store reviews and consulted with credentialed experts to ensure my picks were solid. This included Suzannah Weiss, sex therapist and resident sexologist for Fleshy, and Gary Orenstein, Chief Customer Officer at Bitwarden, to ensure my perspective was backed by expertise in both sexual wellness and digital security.

  • Privacy & security: I carefully read each platform's privacy policies (so you don't have to) and prioritized apps with essential security features like end-to-end encryption, screenshot alerts, and disappearing messages.

  • Accessibility: I tested everything on both iOS and Android devices. Because everyone deserves a good sexting app, regardless of their phone.
