Mashable's Best: E-readers, robovacs, laptops, earbuds, smart home and more

These are the tech, tools, and products — from laptops to e-readers, from earbuds to robovacs, and more — that Mashable ranks best in class.

If you’ve never dabbled in sexting, now's the time to give it a bash (ahem).

Trust us when we say that sexting is much more than just dirty words. Sexting can open up a whole new world and sexy possibilities. Think of it as text-based foreplay — a way of building anticipation ahead of the main event. You'll be raring to go once after a good sexting session.

Hookup apps for everyone

AdultFriendFinder readers’ pick for casual connections

Tinder top pick for finding hookups

Hinge popular choice for regular meetups

But let's be completely clear: We're not talking about just sliding into someone's DMs uninvited with sexy talk via a regular dating app. Though you can definitely do that on AdultFriendFinder, which is kinda the point of that particular website. There are other apps for sexting, too. Yes, the idea of first-time sexting is daunting — all the etiquette and navigation of the appropriate apps. But please chill: We’re here to help by recommending the very best apps for sexting — apps which have been purpose-built for online flirtations and foreplay.

Mashable dating experts have tested scores of platforms over the years, so you can rest assured that we know what we're talking about here. You could say it's a sexty specialist subject. Using both experience and expert research, our app choices are based on various factors — features such as end-to-end encryption, disappearing messages, and screenshot detection, which are all essential for safe sexting (if you believe in safe sex — as you almost certainly do — the same applies here). And please don't forget that when it comes to sexting, you must always consider privacy, safety, and consent.

With that all said and understood, here’s a selection of the very best sexting apps available right now.

Snapchat logo on a phone

The Good & The Bad

  • Free to send content
  • Huge user base
  • Lots of filters & creative tools
  • Disappearing messages
  • Screenshot notifications
  • Better security available
  • High risk of human error

Why We Like It

Snapchat ascended years ago to establish itself as a mainstream social media platform, up there with the likes of Facebook, X, and Instagram. But let’s not forget its early roots. That's right, Snapchat was as the OG sexting app, pioneering the concept of disappearing photos. Even now, all these years on, Snapchat remains one of the most popular methods of sending saucy pics. Add to that a near endless selection of filters, lenses, and creative tools — all of which will sex up those photos even more.

The best part is, you can send anything you want, from naughty pics to sexy voice notes and downright filthy texts. Your snaps will vanish once the recipient opens them, but you can set a time limit (1-10 seconds) or choose "infinity", which will allow the recipient to enjoy your snaps for as long as they like before closing them forever.

The big bonus (and we do mean big) is a user base of over 940 million monthly users and, as of the end of last year, some 17 million paid subscribers on Snapchat+. Subscribing isn’t mandatory — sending snaps is still absolutely free — but that’s where you’ll find the exclusive, experimental, and pre-release features such as the recently introduced Memories Storage Plans. Another reason for subscribing is extra storage, though that will only be useful to heavy Snapchat users who save all their content.

You can also sleep easy knowing that your spicy messages and nudes aren’t being shared around by recipients. Snapchat prevents that from happening by sending you a notification every time some tries to screenshot one of your messages. You could accidentally send a nude to the wrong person, of course, or post something explicit to your story. Seriously, nobody wants to make that sexting error — it's nothing to be ashamed of but you'll almost certainly carry that embarrassment for years. And don’t forget that minors also use Snapchat. Be very cautious and 100 percent sure before interacting with anyone.

  • No screenshot notification

Read our full review of Tinder Platinum.

Everybody's heard of Tinder. The top-rated dating app pioneered the "swipe right for yes, left for no" concept and is now shorthand for whole online dating phenomenon. And while Tinder is technically a dating app, with longterm commitment in mind, its rep tends to attract people open to something a little more casual. That's why it’s the go-to hookup app for anyone who fancies some casual sex without any heavy pressure to commit. In fact, a survey found that 70 percent of its users never meet even their matches in person. Many users come for the hookup but just distracted with the sexting.

Tinder's setup process makes for super easy browsing without the hassle of creating an in-depth profile, so you don't have to fill out all the compatibility-focused questions and can instead focus on the reason you're really there: to find someone hot.

Paid memberships come with nice perks if you're using the app specifically for sexting. With a Tinder Plus membership, you can choose to keep your profile info private until you like another user's profile. With Tinder Gold, you can see who likes you before you swipe, plus you can swipe around the world. And with Tinder Platinum, you don't even need to match with someone to message them, just slide right on into those DMs immediately.

Tinder is always rolling out new features such as "Modes", which creates dedicated spaces to swipe based on your vibe, starting with "Double Date Mode" and "College Mode." Tinder has also tested a new AI matching feature called "Chemistry." This uses conversational prompts and (with your permission) your camera roll to learn about interests and personality. And Tinder has cranked up security features with a mandatory Face Check to ensure users are, y 'know, actually real.

It’s worth remembering that because Tinder is such a massive, mainstream app, so you risk running into mismatched expectations. The person you match with might be looking for a real relationship, not just sexting. Be sure your match is game and willing before you start firing off those steamy texts.

Signal app logo on a phone

Signal

Best For Secure Messaging

The Good & The Bad

  • Free to use & no ads
  • End-to-end encryption
  • Disappearing messages
  • 24-hour "Stories"
  • Username offers more anonymity
  • Needs a real phone number
  • Not for finding new sexting partners
  • No screenshot protection

Why We Like It

Signal is the best choice for safe sexting for several reasons. Firstly, it’s end-to-end encrypted by default — you don’t need to opt in for encryption — and as it's run by a non-profit company, Signal doesn’t need to sell your information or bombard you with tailored ads. In other words, it retains as little information as possible (our sister site PCMag ranked it the No. 1 secure messaging app). We also rate it as arguably the best free sexting app too, so it’s a double bonus.

It's not branded like a dating app — think of it more as a WhatsApp alternative — but it really does fit the bill when it comes to sexy DMs. Signal allows you to share images, text, or video “Stories” — these disappear after 24 hours or a time period of your choosing (from 30 seconds to four weeks).

Alternatively, you can set images to be viewed indefinitely or just once by tapping an infinity symbol. And if you’re worried about sending explicit content to your Stories by mistake (a common concern with sexting apps!) you can actually switch off the Stories. That will prevent any embarrassing gaffes. It also has a “safety number" feature, which is a code assigned to users that effectively confirms messages and pictures are going to the correct recipient.

The only niggle for fiercely private users is that you need a phone number to sign up. The good news is that you won’t have to share it with users and you can change settings so you’re not searchable by phone number.

Pure dating app logo on pink background

Pure

Best For Staying Anonymous

The Good & The Bad

  • Devil's Bones feature connects with random users for chats
  • No name required
  • Self-destructing chats.
  • "True Photo" verifies users in real-time
  • Free for women to use.
  • Not as good outside of cities
  • Men's subscription is pricey

Why We Like It

Read our full review of Pure.

If steamy, totally anonymous dirty talk flips your switch — whether it’s sexting or full-on phone sex — Pure is the app for you. Indeed, Pure is so geared towards anonymity that it won’t even ask your name. It’s not just about you protecting personal data. It also means you can connect to other users without having to reveal your identity, preventing any potentially awkward moments — like realising that you're sexting someone you know IRL. And let’s be honest: Sexting from a secret identity is hot.

But that’s not all you get with Pure. It also has a cool feature called "Devil's Bones", which cranks up the excitement for adventurous sexy talk. The feature allows you to roll the dice and start a random chat with a complete stranger. It adds another level of spice to the whole anonymous platform concept. And who knows where the stranger sex chat might lead?

It’s also good for privacy and safety features. All chats self-destruct in 24 hours, and photos will disappear as soon as the recipient has viewed them. The app blocks screenshots and notifies you when someone tries to take a shot of one of your chats. If you’re a bit queasy about anonymity — as in, you want to be sure you’re talking to a real person, or not being catfished — Pure allows you to send "True Photo" requests. It’s a smart, secure way to explore your wilder side.

There’s also a bonus for female users: Pure is completely free for women. Fellas will have to stump up a subscription fee, however.

Confide app logo on a pink background

The Good & The Bad

  • "ScreenShield" tech prevents screenshots
  • End-to-end encryption
  • Messages self-destruct
  • Hidden usernames for privacy
  • Chats are deleted forever
  • A bit clunky in places

Why We Like It

Confide is the safest app you’ll find for swapping nudes thanks to robust security features. For that same reason it’s a go-to secure messaging app for executives, paranoid politicians, and other professionals in security conscious industries (we wouldn’t like to speculate on whether they use it to share nudes, of course). All of which means Confide is perfect for flirty, off-the-record chats.

Confide is available in both app and desktop form, and boasts end-to-end encryption and self-destructing messages. Your username never appears on the same screen as your actual messages, and messages are protected by "ScreenShield technology", which blocks any attempt to screenshot them. As an extra level of security, messages automatically expire at both ends once they’re read. That means every message and pic sent via Confide is viewed just once. (Not that we're encouraging adultery, but that makes Confide a good option for hiding sext messages from anyone you might not want to see them.)

There’s a clandestine sexiness about the whole process. You read messages by running your finger (or mouse on a desktop) line-by-line. The lines appear then immediately disappear again. The downside is that you can’t return to your sexy chats and favourite nudes. If you want to revisit your sexting history over and again, maybe try Signal instead.

We-Vibe App logo on a smartphone

The Good & The Bad

  • Adds sex toys into the mix
  • Controls your partner's toy remotely
  • Interactive features like custom vibes
  • Integrated video chat
  • Requires a We-Vibe toy

This is something a bit different because the We-Vibe app isn't a standalone messaging platform but an accompanying app to a range of Bluetooth-connected sex toys. It’s perfect if you’re away from your partner for any reason, or if you’re in a long-distance relationship.

The app lets you and your partner sync your We-Vibe toys from anywhere in the world via its "Long Distance Play" mode (allowing one person to control the other's toy) with just a tap on your phone screen. You can control the rhythm and intensity of your partner's toy, pleasuring and bringing them to climax without being there. It’s a means of closing the gap between you while adding a whole new physical dimension to sexting. You can also message and video chat directly within the app, allowing you to see and hear your partner’s reaction in real-time.

According to the We-Vibe website, most long-distance couples who use the app agree that it made them feel closer to their partner, with 76 percent saying they've been more creative with where they have sex.

Features include a dedicated "Touch Mode" which means you can subtly control your partner’s We-Vibe toy with just a fingertip. You can also create custom patterns and hand over the reins to your partner as you sext or watch via video call. The only drawback is the extra cost of purchasing a We-Vibe toy, but believe us when we say it’s worth the money. You'll get a real buzz for it.

Candy.ai app logo

The Good & The Bad

  • Good practice if you're shy or anxious
  • Realistic convos in an NSFW, sex-positive space
  • Create your own AI partner
  • Or choose from a variety of AI partners
  • Paid users receive photos and voice messages
  • It's not an actual app
  • Premium gets expensive
  • AI may not satisfy your need for intimacy

AI is taking over the most unlikely corners of modern life, including online sexy talk. Candy.ai exists for that very purpose. If you didn’t already know, AI sexting is part of a fast-growing niche.

It’s real futuristic fantasy stuff. Candy.ai gives you the tools to create your own virtual AI companion — or as Candy.ai puts it, "create your own AI girlfriend" — allowing you to decide their looks, personality, and sex drive. You can even decide on their career. There are plenty of pre-designed virtual companions available too, if you don’t want the hassle of creating your own.

Your new AI companion offers safe and non-judgmental interactions, allowing you to explore any and all fantasies — fantasies that you might be too anxious to bring up with real sexting partners. There’s no need to feel embarrassed about it. Lots of people are now turning to AI avatars for roleplaying and raunchiness. It’s just like talking to the real thing. Candy.ai's technology is so advanced that the sexting will be totally convincing, sparing you from any clunky, awkward, or robotic responses. ChatGPT could never.

As with most of these apps, upgrading is a must if you want the best (not to mention naughtiest) features. With a premium subscription you can listen to AI voice messages, make AI phone calls, receive explicit messages, and enjoy unlimited sexy text messages. That said, it’s free to start sexting with any of the models on the site. It's worth noting, however, that this isn't an actual app — it's a mobile version of a desktop site.
