For our 25th British Science Week we were delighted to partner with Eurotunnel who, in 2019, are also celebrating 25 years since the Channel Tunnel opened!
As Principal Partner for the 2019 campaign, Eurotunnel resources featured in all British Science Week activity packs with activities relating to rock layering, tunnels and signals. In addition, we worked together on some fantastic half-term science activities and a live Run with the Ancestors race. Find out more below...
Fun family science
Between 15-17 February, the British Science Association facilitated hands-on sessions for families travelling with Eurotunnel.
Hundreds of children took part in the activities, which we hope provided some fun and inspiration for families before boarding and during their journeys. Over the weekend, travelling families took part in dinosaur modelling, creative colouring and were gifted themed activity packs to keep the children occupied on their journeys.

Activity Packs
This year’s British Science Week activity packs were themed around ‘journeys’ and featured an array of Eurotunnel facts and activities.
From creating infographics from interesting stats to engineering a tunnel and train system, to creating a board game, the activities provided an engaging way for young people to get engaged with STEM.

Run with the Ancestors
Thanks to Eurotunnel’s support, we were able to create a brand-new running app and race for this year’s British Science Week. Run with the Ancestors has an immersive narration that charts one million years of Britain’s history, from the blustery climates of yesteryear dominated by woolly mammoths and sabre-toothed cats to the arrival of our first ancestors.The theme for this year’s race resonated with Eurotunnel’s heritage, as until the most recent glacial period (which ended c.10,000 years ago), the Channel would have been dry land connecting Britain with Continental Europe.
People participated virtually, via the app, or took part in the live race event at London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on Saturday 16 March. The 5k run was ideal for beginners, and saw several families participating, while the 10k run was a real test for the stamina of more seasoned runners.
All entrants were seen proudly wearing their unique Run with the Ancestors medal once they crossed the finish line!
CREST
Eurotunnel’s wider partnership with the British Science Association for 2019 also includes sponsorship of CREST Star and SuperStar. In the summer term, we will be sharing a newly curated pack of CREST SuperStar activities, with primary school teachers who participated in British Science Week, to offer them a range of follow up activities and investigations to run with their Key Stage 2 students.
