The brightest minds in science communication are gathered at Manchester Metropolitan University to discuss the issues facing the sector at the Science Communication Conference.
This year we have really exciting programme, split into three levels; interested, experienced and expert.
Today’s sessions kicked off with talk from Greg Foot and Dr Karen Bultitude for delegates new to science communication. This was followed by a keynote from Jess Thom (Touretteshero), and sessions discussing the barriers to engagement, the importance of dialogue, storytelling in science media, and creating shareable content.
During the day, there is also a speed mentoring session, and an improvisation workshop. Tonight, there is a drinks reception followed by a science ceilidh, sponsored by The Royal Society of Chemistry.
Friday’s sessions feature a discussion about the history of science, whether making has made a difference. There is also a ‘funders anonymous’ session, with representatives from the Wellcome Trust, Crowdfunder, Royal Society of Chemistry and the Department for Business Innovation and Skills. In the afternoon, there is a series of challenge workshops, come along and discuss how we can combat key obstacles in the science communication sector.
