Today (19 March), the British Science Association (BSA) has announced that two new trustees have joined Council – the governing board of trustees for the organisation.

Matt Howard and Neil Greenwood, who were selected following an open recruitment process, have joined Council from 1st March and will attend their first meeting this week.

Matt Howard will bring his strong background in the communications and engagement sector as the BSA’s new Vice-President for Engagement, strengthening the BSA’s expertise and oversight in this area. He is currently Chief Strategy Officer for the Faraday Institution, and prior to that, worked as the Chief Communications Officer for the US Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory.

Speaking about his decision to join Council, Matt said: “I am delighted to be joining the BSA’s Council because I identify with its vision to democratise science, ensuring it is not just accessible, but genuinely relevant to the diverse fabric of our society.

“Science transcends lab walls; it offers a unique lens through which to perceive, contemplate, and engage with the complexities of our world. I believe in the BSA's efforts to promote a hands-on, participatory, and inclusive approach to science, making it both visible and achievable for everyone."

Neil Greenwood joins the BSA’s Council as its new Treasurer. Neil recently retired after over 25 years as Executive Director of Finance and Corporate Services at the Natural History Museum and brings this background and expertise in finance and operations to Council. He sits on a number of other boards in addition to the BSA. He serves as a Co-opted Governor of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, as a member of the Finance and Resources Committee of the University of Roehampton, and as a trustee and honorary treasurer of the London Playing Fields Foundation.

Speaking about his latest board role, Neil said: “Having worked at the Natural History Museum for over a quarter of a century, I can see the synergy between the aims of the BSA and the museum, something I am looking forward to exploring more. I am a strong advocate for science to be used as a powerful basis for the solutions and actions we need to overcome global challenges and develop a sustainable future – and it is evident that the BSA also holds that belief.

“The BSA has an inspiring vision – a future where science is more relevant, representative, and connected to society – and a bold and timely manifesto, and I am looking forward to working with fellow trustees and the BSA team on delivering both.”

This month also sees the departure of Steve Nuttall, current Vice-President for Engagement and Deputy Chair, and Kalli Bowyer, current Treasurer, as they both come to the end of their second terms on Council.
