The current inquiry by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Diversity and Inclusion in STEM is investigating equity in the UK STEM workforce. The Call for Evidence closed to written submissions on 29 January 2021, and we were delighted to receive over 80 pieces of evidence from across the STEM sector. In addition to obtaining insights from the sector through the Call for Evidence, the BSA hosted four evidence roundtables in February and March 2021. The purpose of these sessions was to convene experts from across the STEM sectors and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) fields on behalf of the APPG. The roundtables provided a platform for professionals in and around STEM to share knowledge on the following themes:
- Mapping inequity across the STEM workforce and Protected Characteristics
- Data, demographics, and diversity: improving the quality of evidence and reporting on representation in the STEM workforce
- Inclusive recruitment and retention in the STEM workforce
- How does the UK Government advance and inhibit equity and inclusive cultures within the STEM workforce?
These evidence sessions enabled those in the industry to share ideas, insights and experiences that could contribute to achieving the inquiry’s aim of combatting inequity in the STEM workforce.
