Volunteering is of great importance to the British Science Association - we have thousands of volunteers involved in our programmes in a diverse number of ways. Those who dedicate their time range from senior level academics in our scientific sections, to school students on our CREST youth panel, and everyone in between! They help us put on an impressive range of events each year and we are extremely proud and grateful to have such a brilliant network.
Volunteering is such an integral part of the BSA that many of our Head Office staff also donate their time to causes close to their hearts.
Alex Blatherwick is from our Education Department and she volunteers every Wednesday and two Saturdays a month at ZSL London Zoo. Alex spends her weekends talking to the public about the animals and the world-wide conservation work that the ZSL is involved in. On Wednesdays she is part of the Discovery and Learning team, whose job is to develop strategies to engage and educate visitors. They often work with school groups and Alex plays an integral role to make sure that the teachers and pupils an incredible visit to the zoo.

Katherine Matheison, our Director of Programmes, volunteers as a Brownie Guide leader as well as for a couple of international and arts organisations.
She enjoys the volunteering because:
“I meet people who I probably wouldn’t come across in other areas of my life. I find it rewarding to help create events and experiences for other people, whilst getting the opportunity to try new things in a fun, supportive environment.”
Katie Leeper is our Volunteer Engagement Officer and she volunteered full time for 5 months with a West End show, called You Me Bum Bum Train (YMBBT). This is a hugely successful and immersive production that is developed entirely by a team of volunteers.
“I had an amazing time volunteering at YMBBT. It’s a great community to be involved with and there is something very unique about working on a project with only other volunteers. There is very little ego involved and there is a lot of gratitude for the work you put in. I would recommend everyone gives volunteering a go.”
