The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Diversity & Inclusion in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) have announced that their next project will investigate Regional STEM Skills Inequity. The British Science Association (BSA) provide the secretariat for this APPG.
At the end of 2021, the APPG published a ‘call for ideas’, inviting organisations, groups and individuals in the sector to suggest areas of focus. The Group received over 20 proposals.
The Regional STEM Skills Inequity project evolved from an initial idea submitted by Engineering UK. The APPG plan to map STEM skills data across the UK. This data analysis, which will be conducted on and presented at a constituency level, will help to understand how skills provision varies nationally and intersects with socioeconomic regional inequities. It will identify the place-based barriers to STEM and examine links between minoritised communities and STEM access.
The APPG on Diversity & Inclusion in STEM aims to promote the inclusion and progression of people from diverse backgrounds in STEM, and to encourage government, parliamentarians, academics, businesses and other stakeholders to work towards a STEM sector that is representative of the population. The APPG also want to consider and influence changes in policy that will lead to this outcome.
A request for proposals to undertake this work will be published in Spring 2022.
