All-Party Parliamentary Group on Diversity & Inclusion in STEM
About the Group
The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) in STEM aims to promote the inclusion and progression of people from diverse backgrounds in STEM, and to encourage government, parliamentarians, academics, businesses and other stakeholders to work towards a STEM sector that is representative of the population. We also want to consider and influence changes in policy that will lead to this outcome.
As part of its work on equality, diversity and inclusion across the science and science engagement sectors, the British Science Association (BSA) acts as secretariat for the Group. The Group is made up of Members of Parliament and Lords, and is a focus for collaboration with businesses and other organisations in STEM.

Roundtable discussion - Tuesday 1 July 2025
To support the second phase of the EDI strategies in STEM project and learn about the challenges that STEM organisations face when collecting EDI data, in July 2025 the APPG organised a parliamentary roundtable discussion on data collection, insight, and analysis for diversity and inclusion in STEM. Hosted by the APPG Chair, Samantha Niblett MP, the roundtable brought together policymakers and EDI and data experts from across the STEM sector.
Professor Kevin Fenton, Director at the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (London), and 2024-25 President of the British Science Association, chaired the discussion. With an aim to discuss what good data collection approaches look like, and what could be done to improve national-level education and workforce data, the group debated the following questions:
- What can be done to improve reporting and analysis of Protected Characteristics1 (or similar) in an intersectional manner?
- How important do you think better reporting on Protected Characteristics is to your organisation?
- What STEM data are we missing that could be reported on?
- What changes can be made to national data sets to improve reporting on the STEM workforce?
For a full summary of the discussion, please see the APPG report on Data collection, insight and analysis for diversity and inclusion in STEM.
