UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) – the government agency which funds scientific research in the UK - has welcomed a new CEO.

Science Minister Lord Patrick Vallance announced the appointment of Professor Sir Ian Chapman on Tuesday 25 February 2025. Sir Ian will take up his role this summer.

The British Science Association (BSA) is a charity working toward a future where science is more relevant, representative and connected to society. Our lead strategic partners are UKRI and Wellcome.

Welcoming Sir Ian to UKRI, Hannah Russell, Chief Executive of the British Science Association says:

"On behalf of the staff and trustees at the British Science Association, I would like to offer my warm congratulations to Sir Ian on his new role as Chief Executive of UKRI. I look forward to working with Sir Ian and continuing our strong partnership with UKRI to bring together people and science.

"Working with UKRI on initiatives like British Science Week, the CREST Awards, Sciencewise, our Community-led Research Pilot and the UK Science Festivals Network, we aim to encourage everyone in the UK to see science, research, and innovation as relevant to their lives, vital for society and the economy, and something with which they can be involved and have a voice.

"I am delighted to see that an outstanding scientist like Sir Ian, who has shown strong commitment to science engagement both in a personal capacity and through his leadership of the UK Atomic Energy Authority, has been announced as UKRI’s incoming Chief Executive.
