Honorary Fellow of the BSA, Lorelly Wilson, has been made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) at the 2016 Queen’s Birthday Honours. 

MBEs are given yearly to mark the Monarch’s official birthday. They reward individuals for their outstanding contributions to the local community through art, science, charity and public service.  

Lorelly has received this honour in recognition of her dedicated and creative work within science, where she tirelessly inspires, educates, and motivates people through her various outreach projects.  

As well as being Chair of the BSA’s North West branch, she also holds positions at the Royal Society of Chemistry, the University of Manchester, and the North West Science Alliance. She runs 11 SciBars (science in a bar) events across the North West to help engage the public and inspire their interest in science. She is also founder of the hugely successful and interactive Chemistry with Cabbage science workshop for primary school children, which she takes to around 200 schools per year.  

Lorelly said of her work: "It was the enthusiasm of volunteers at the British Science Association who first got me interested in sharing the wonder of chemistry" 

The BSA's Chief Executive, Imran Khan, has praised the honour: "The dedication that Lorelly and other volunteers like her show in promoting science is an irreplaceable part of the British Science Association's work." 

"Our goal is to make science a more fundamental part of our culture and society, and we couldn't do that without passionate individuals like Lorelly. Her recognition by the Queen is richly deserved and everyone at the BSA is delighted for her!" 

The full list of awardees will be released on 11 June, which is the Queen’s Official Birthday.
