King's Maths from the Underground Residential
Bethan Hollo · 2026-05-22 · via Undergraduate Study

Elevate your mathematical thinking with an immersive three-night maths residential for UK state school students.

This residential will take place from the 25th-28th August 2026 and will provide the opportunity for you to explore mathematical concepts beyond the standard school curriculum. Under the guidance of King’s Mathematics Fellows, you'll have the opportunity to transform how you approach and solve mathematical problems. You'll also experience the types of abstract reasoning and critical thinking expected at university level, which will support you when applying to study mathematics at competitive universities such as Cambridge. There will also be downtime in the evening for you to socialise with other attendees alongside exciting social activities run by current King’s students.

To be eligible for the event, you must be:

  • Going into Year 13 in September 2026 (England and Wales), going into S6 in September 2026 (Scotland), or going into Year 14 in September 2026 (Northern Ireland)
  • Currently studying at a UK state school
  • Currently studying for, and expected to achieve an A* in, A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics (England, Wales and Northern Ireland), or an A in Advanced Higher Mathematics (Scotland)
  • Seeking to study a mathematics or mathematics-adjacent undergraduate degree and wanting to deepen your understanding of the subject

The event is open to all who meet the above criteria, but in the event of being oversubscribed, students will be selected based on widening participation criteria. Students who attend private school on a full means-tested bursary should contact us in advance to enquire about eligibility.

This event is completely free to attend. You'll stay overnight in student accommodation and meals will be provided. Travel expenses will be covered for students who can provide evidence of eligibility for Free School Meals (FSM). We may also cover expenses for students who are not eligible for FSM but can provide evidence of a household income below median average earnings in the UK. Please contact us if you are unsure about your eligibility.

For more information and to apply, click here. The deadline for completing the application form is 12:00 noon on Friday 12 June 2026. As part of the application process, you will be required to provide the details of a teacher referee. Prior to applying, you must ensure that you have identified an appropriate teacher who will supply your reference and obtained their email address.
