Xbox and Activision's Call of Duty franchise has grown immensely over the years and is presently one of the largest video game properties in the industry, with the FPS games raking in countless millions throughout its history. One could argue there's never been a better game series to adapt into action films — and last year, it was confirmed that Activision is teaming up with Paramount to make one.

It was reported that Activision turned down an offer from Steven Spielberg to direct to retain full creative control over the film soon after, and then in late October, Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan and director Peter Berg were brought onto the project, with the pair co-writing and producing.

Beyond that, we know and have heard nothing else about the Call of Duty movie — until now, that is. On Thursday this week, Xbox and Activision officially announced the film's release date on social media, revealing that the Call of Duty movie is scheduled to come out on June 30, 2028.

That's unfortunate news for those who were hoping we'd see the hit military shooter franchise debut on the big screen earlier, though the far-off release date isn't a huge surprise given that the film's production only just got off the ground at the tail end of 2025.

Notably, the Call of Duty movie is hardly the first video game adaptation project that Microsoft and Xbox have worked on. Amazon's Fallout TV show has been a colossal success both critically and financially, and the Minecraft movie performed incredibly well, too.

Beyond those two standouts, we know Netflix is working on a Gears of War film with Jon Spaihts (Dune, Prometheus) writing the script and David Leitch (Deadpool 2, Bullet Train) directing. There was also the Halo TV show from Paramount, though that project was widely panned and canceled after two seasons.

The fact that Paramount is also working with Xbox and Activision on the Call of Duty film has some worried that it will end up being as disappointing as the Halo TV series. Personally, I'm choosing to be optimistic, as they're two completely different projects with different writers and producers.

As for what the movie will actually be about, we know nothing at the moment, though it's a safe bet that it will be a military-themed action film with plenty of "tacticool" guns, a moody plot, and a whole lot of explosions. It could adapt one of any Call of Duty stories set in the past, present, or future, or introduce a brand new one. Ultimately, only time will tell.
