A Look Back at 2024: Megaport’s Biggest Updates
2024-12-16 · via Megaport Blog

By Michael Reid, CEO & Board Director

From expanding our global footprint to launching exciting new solutions, it’s been a year of growth, innovation, and connection.

I can’t believe it has already been almost two years since I joined the Megaport team! So many great things have happened in that time, and there are no signs of slowing down.

As 2024 comes to a close, I want to take a moment to reflect on the strides Megaport has made this year, because it has been a massive one. We’ve grown our global footprint, launched new features and solutions, and had the chance to connect with customers and partners all over the world.

Here’s a recap of our 2024 highlights.

1. Expanded our reach to over 930 locations – and counting

On our endless mission to be the most widespread NaaS provider available, we added more data centers to our network, surpassing 930 locations worldwide – nearly 100 more than we had this time last year. Alongside this, our partner provider network also grew as we welcomed new partners into the Megaport ecosystem, offering customers more reach and choice than they’ve ever had before.

With no signs of slowing down, we’re excited to see how our network expands even further in 2025.

2. Launched in three new countries

This year, we brought Megaport’s extensive solutions to three new markets:

  • Spain: Our launch in Europe’s fifth-largest economy is helping businesses leverage a rapidly advancing technology landscape.
  • Italy: We deployed our services in one of Europe’s fastest-growing tech ecosystems, accelerating their cloud growth.
  • Brazil: We recently established our presence in Latin America’s most populous country, unlocking new paths to business growth throughout the region.

As of December 2024, we’re now operating in a total of 26 countries!

3. Launched Megaport AI Exchange (AIx)

AI claimed world domination in 2024. It’s everywhere.

But AI isn’t magic. It’s built on computing infrastructure, and the success of your AI integrations depends on the connections that bind this infrastructure.

That’s why we launched Megaport AI Exchange (AIx), set to do for AI infrastructure what we did for the cloud many years ago.

AIx is a connected ecosystem of service providers, available on our marketplace, that integrate seamlessly with your Megaport network. The result? You can interconnect all of your AI infrastructure, workloads, and providers on our private, global, scalable network backbone.

4. Launched Megaport Financial Services Exchange (FSx)

Financial institutions, trading firms, and market participants need seamless access to global markets, data providers, and financial services to stay competitive. And with so many customers in financial services using Megaport for their connectivity, we wanted to provide a distinct solution.

Enter Financial Services Exchange (FSX): our innovative connectivity platform tailored specifically for the financial services industry.

With FSX you can get direct, on-demand, and secure connections to a vast ecosystem of financial services including exchanges, market data vendors, clearinghouses, and more. Now, finserv customers can get an all-inclusive experience on our high-performance, scalable network fabric.

5. Enabled Microsoft Azure ExpressRoute Metro

In 2024, we saw companies prioritize network resiliency as AI and big data made uptime, security, and speed increasingly difficult to achieve.

For Microsoft Azure users, ExpressRoute Metro improves reliability by offering increased path diversity between on-premises networks and Azure, bypassing the internet to ensure consistent performance.

In 2024, Megaport enabled Microsoft Azure ExpressRoute Metro so joint customers can supercharge their network resilience with all the benefits of our software-defined network. Users can expect to reduce downtime, improve latency, and optimize their Azure architecture, as well as integrate their ExpressRoute Metro connectivity with their wider network.

6. Expanded availability of our 100G VXCs to 597 data centers worldwide

As super-high-bandwidth connections become the norm, not the outlier, we expanded availability of our 100G Virtual Cross Connects (VXCs), reaching a total of 597 data centers across North America, Asia Pacific, and Europe.

With 100G VXCs now available from so many locations, customers have unmatched geographical freedom when it comes to optimizing their networks. These supersized connections are perfect for handling data-heavy applications and large-scale cloud migrations, or just providing some extra oomph to ensure seamless operations.

This expansion also makes our 100G connectivity one of the most widely available in the NaaS market.

7. Released our official Megaport Terraform provider

We’ve offered a Terraform provider for a long time. But it wasn’t until 2024 that we made it official, turning it from a passion project to a formal product with dedicated support.

For those with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) skills, the rewards of using Terraform are plentiful. And our own fully supported IaC provider empowers users to reduce provisioning time, lower deployment costs, and automate management of their entire Megaport network.

8. Launched our first AWS Direct Connect network service offering on AWS Marketplace

Part of achieving a high-performance multicloud environment is consolidating the connections that tie your cloud applications together.

In 2024, Megaport became the first AWS Direct Connect network service offering on AWS Marketplace, making it even easier for AWS customers to implement our cloud connectivity solutions and streamline their multicloud.

With this offering, joint customers can now create their own custom network designs in consultation with our solutions team and consume it as a private offer directly from AWS Marketplace. And as a leading AWS Direct Connect Delivery and Outpost Service Ready partner, our solutions team has specialized expertise to solve complex hybrid and multicloud connectivity challenges.

9. Improved Megaport Internet

Megaport Internet has now levelled up with the introduction of new automation functionalities, making it even faster and easier to deploy.

For enterprise customers after consistent, reliable connectivity, dedicated internet access is a must. Download and upload speeds aren’t impacted by competing traffic, bandwidth is available right when and where users need it, and customer experience improves as a result.

But traditional provider connections can be slow to deploy and difficult to manage. Instead, Megaport Internet offers all the benefits of Megaport’s scalable network fabric, and can be deployed in just 60 seconds. Plus, Megaport Internet can be easily integrated and scaled with our other solutions.

10. Made plenty of updates and additions to our portal

Our team is constantly working to gather feedback, enhance customer experience, and extend the capabilities of the Megaport Portal. As a result, we made a heap of feature updates in 2024 to improve convenience, control, and user experience.

Now, our customers can enjoy plenty of new features and expansions including:

  • expanded availability for Megaport Internet
  • more metro availability for Megaport Virtual Edge (MVE) in all MVE-enabled markets
  • diversity zone visibility and selection for Megaport Cloud Router (MCR) and MVE
  • new display and filter options for a better portal experience
  • service status page
  • service keys for MCR and MVE
  • direct portal feedback
  • the ability to move VXCs between MVEs with multiple vNICs
  • and more!

11. Went on a world tour

This year, we tried something completely new: We hosted the first-ever Megaport World Tour.

Attracting a total of nearly 900 attendees and spanning 51 cities, these events were the perfect chance to discuss data center and cloud connectivity with customers and peers in our industry.

Our team loved spending time with a global community of like-minded people, and left each event feeling inspired. We saw a collective curiosity about how we can reshape the future of cloud and networking with evolving technologies like machine learning, APIs, and edge computing.

Thanks to everyone who came along!
