Why You Need a Scalable Enterprise Network in 2021
Megaport · 2021-05-12 · via Megaport Blog

As businesses continue to globalize, embrace remote operations, and increase their use of multicloud, adoption of Network as a Service (NaaS) solutions is increasing.

According to the Forrester Analytics’ Global Business Technographics® Network and Telecom Survey, 2020, the most common reason companies are adopting as-a-service networking is to provide more flexibility to their business (39%). And a huge part of the flexibility that a NaaS provides is the ability to scale.

A scalable enterprise network gives organizations the ability to easily increase and decrease both network capacity (bandwidth and speed) and network reach (locations and connection options). With sufficient network scalability, businesses can adapt to real-time traffic and data patterns to make sure they have efficient digital workflows without over-allocating resources.

Put simply, if your enterprise network environment isn’t scalable, you could be wasting a lot of time, effort, and money. Companies can easily find themselves severely overpaying for bandwidth they don’t use, or just not having enough to keep their services running smoothly.

By ensuring your enterprise’s network is truly scalable, your business can realize a range of economic benefits.

Reduced costs: G-Core Labs

The global gaming market is set to reach USD$256.97 billion by 2025, with 3.24 billion video gamers worldwide as of June 2022. With most video games played online or via mobile devices, this industry generates an eye-watering amount of data every single day—and the enterprises behind these games depend on reliable connectivity to deal with ever-changing traffic surges and connections between locations across the globe.

One company in this space that has successfully boosted their digital capabilities to deal with the gaming industry’s massive growth is G-Core Labs. This Luxembourg-based global IT solutions provider has improved network resiliency, minimized latency, and saved costs just by right-sizing their connectivity.

To learn more about scalability in digital media, read our blog post.

As a result of building out an unparalleled IT infrastructure for industry-leading game developer, Wargaming, G-Core Labs became the Guinness World Record holder for “Most Players Online Simultaneously on one Multiplayer Online Game Server’’ at more than 1.1 million people back in 2014. The gaming industry was booming, and it hasn’t slowed down since.

Depending on the time of day and year, traffic can fluctuate drastically on G-Core Labs’ gaming infrastructure. Being prepared for daily peaks (between 7pm and 10pm local time) and seasonal peaks (Christmas and summer holidays) is critical for them to keep their customers moving.

“The nature of our business demands minimal latency interconnection with guaranteed yet flexible bandwidth…We’ve researched and found no such provider in Asia except Megaport, who provides true flexibility to scale connectivity real-time”

With a traditional ISP arrangement, continuing to manage this huge amount of constantly-shifting traffic would have been incredibly expensive for G-Core Labs, as they would have had to pre-provision and commit to huge amounts of bandwidth to meet peak end-user demand. But by instead leveraging Megaport’s Network as a Service (NaaS), they benefit from a flexible and reliable network architecture. On-demand, “pay-as-you-go” provisioning means G-Core Labs can scale up and down to exactly what they need, when they need it, saving significantly on costs and maintaining control of their enterprise network.

Lower latency: Vigilant.IT

Vigilant.IT is an Azure and private cloud, hybrid solutions specialist with over 15 years of experience providing managed, professional, and hosting services to clients across multiple industries. As their legacy dual 100Mb connection to Microsoft Azure became crowded from the amount of running Azure Site Recovery workloads, they knew they needed to find a solution with greater capacity to maintain the lowest possible latency, no matter the requirements.

Vigilant.IT decided to provision a 10G ExpressRoute connection via Megaport’s Software Defined Network (SDN) to support workload and project overflow. While setting up with a traditional ISP would have taken approximately two months, they were able to begin moving data to Azure with Megaport within two weeks of reaching out.

With Vigilant.IT’s data now running on Megaport’s private, scalable network, they can now scale up their bandwidth when onboarding new customers requiring a high-capacity “lift and shift” approach, or just when they’re running some extra workloads and need to keep their connectivity processes optimized.

Scalability future-proofs your network

While your business may be able to survive without a scalable network, it’s far from efficient. Freeing your enterprise from expensive long-term contracts, safeguarding your network from data overload, and saving costs by right-sizing your connectivity is as easy as “point, click, connect” on the Megaport network. We also recently announced the availability of 100G ports in select locations worldwide for those looking to supersize their capacity. By making sure you consider flexibility and scalability in the cloud connectivity solution you choose,  you can set your enterprise up to thrive for years to come.
