Megaport Expands Into India With Extreme IX
2025-12-17 · via Megaport Blog

By Matt Simpson, Executive VP

Megaport acquires Extreme IX, adding seven Internet Exchanges and 40 data centers across India’s fastest-growing digital hubs to deliver broader connectivity options for customers.

Expanding through acquisition in one of the world’s fastest growing digital markets

Megaport has acquired Extreme IX, India’s leading Internet Exchange operator. This acquisition expands Megaport’s global platform into one of the world’s most rapidly growing digital infrastructure ecosystems and supports our strategy to deliver scalable, high performance connectivity across the Asia Pacific region.

India is a strategically important market for cloud, content delivery, enterprise connectivity, and data center growth. However, entering the market through traditional expansion is complex and time intensive. Network companies must build local teams, secure carrier and regulatory licenses, build out a highly resilient network, navigate regional and federal compliance, and establish trust within a competitive interconnection landscape.

For many global providers, these steps can take several years. But, as enterprises adopt software-defined, programmable, ecosystem-agnostic networks, markets like India—with significant investment in AI and IT infrastructure—become increasingly important.

Through the acquisition of Extreme IX, Megaport gains:

  • a resilient network with established IXs
  • an experienced in-country team
  • a strong operational foundation that accelerates our ability to support customers within India, while also enabling multinationals to seamlessly interconnect into and out of the region.

A new network footprint for customers across India

Extreme IX operates a network with Internet Exchanges in seven of India’s key cities and digital hubs:

  • Delhi
  • Kolkata
  • Hyderabad
  • Chennai
  • Bengaluru
  • Mumbai
  • Pune.

These locations connect 40+ data centers and 400+ customers, including regional carriers, cloud and content providers, enterprises, and digital businesses. By integrating the Megaport platform across the existing Extreme IX network, customers gain global reach, greater connectivity options to cloud and DC, and a rich ecosystem of services along with the automation and ease of use that Megaport is known for.

As traffic and data become more distributed, ecosystems across India’s major metros are becoming increasingly important for delivering low-latency, local connectivity. The Megaport Cloud Network Report 2025 reflects this rising demand, recording a 42% year-on-year increase in routing and edge deployments worldwide. In few places is this growth more obvious than India; according to IMARC Group, the country’s cloud computing market size reached USD 37.1 billion in 2025 and is set to reach almost USD 267 billion by 2034 (a CAGR of over 24%).

The acquisition also advances Megaport’s planned market entry and network rollout by approximately three years. This includes the addition of a seasoned in-country team across operations, support, sales, finance, and leadership, who will play a central role in ongoing service delivery, regional expansion, and customer success.

Integrating Extreme IX into the Megaport platform

Over the coming months, the Extreme IX network will be integrated into Megaport’s global Software Defined Network. As this integration progresses, customers in India will gain access to Megaport services including:

  • cloud connectivity
  • data center interconnects
  • internet
  • virtual edge
  • compute capabilities.

Learn how NaaS is evolving and why these services matter in our on-demand webinar.

Through this phased rollout, customers will be able to build and manage connectivity using a unified platform that is consistent across regions. This will simplify network design, reduce operational overhead, and improve performance for organizations that operate within India or connect into India from other markets.

With the addition of Extreme IX, Megaport’s global footprint expands to 27 countries across North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Latin America. The acquisition strengthens Megaport’s regional capabilities, creating a more complete and scalable platform for global cloud, carrier, and enterprise connectivity.

What this means for customers

The acquisition of Extreme IX provides several direct benefits for customers operating in India or connecting to India from abroad.

  • Greater local presence: Customers can access connectivity within India’s most important digital hubs without needing to manage separate regional providers.
  • Improved performance: Traffic can stay local when needed, reducing latency and optimizing paths to cloud and content.
  • Faster expansion: New Megaport services will become available as the Extreme IX network integrates, creating more ways for customers to scale.
  • Operational consistency: Customers can use the same Megaport interface and service model across global markets, including India.
  • Smoother onboarding: With an experienced in-country team now part of Megaport, customers receive support from people who understand the local market and operational requirements.

Moving forward together

As we integrate Extreme IX into the Megaport platform, our focus stays on creating a simple, high performance way for businesses to connect across India and the world. We are excited for what this means for customers and for the opportunities it opens as we grow our presence in one of the most important technology markets in the world.

As we take this next step, our focus is simple: Protect what’s been built, honour the team behind it, and invest in the future. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Founders of Extreme IX, Victor Francess, Plamen Petkov and Nikolai Gorchilov. Their vision, commitment, and community-first ethos laid the foundation for everything Extreme IX represents today, and we’re proud to continue building on that legacy.

First, we’re committed to preserving and strengthening the Extreme IX platform and community. Megaport has operated Internet Exchanges for more than 13 years, and we’ll continue investing in this ecosystem with the same neutrality, reliability, and engineering-first mindset the IX community expects.

We’ll also retain and support the full in-country Extreme IX team. The people who know this network best—including our Country Head, Support Lead, and Head of Finance—will continue to lead day-to-day operations and guide the business through this next phase of growth.

Victor Francess, Founder of Extreme IX, shared his perspective on the next chapter for the platform.

“I could not be more excited for what is ahead and am proud to see the Extreme IX network become part of Megaport’s global vision. Over the past decade, we have built one of India’s most trusted, resilient, and community driven Internet Exchange networks.

“With Megaport’s global scale, capital investment, and advanced product capabilities, we now have the opportunity to take this platform to an entirely new level.”

As we integrate capabilities, we’ll expand our sales, solutions, and marketing teams to support new Megaport services, improve customer experience, and bring fresh opportunities to both existing Extreme IX participants and global Megaport customers connecting into India.

Together, we’re building on a strong foundation and creating an even more connected future.
