Introducing 100G MCRs
2025-01-20 · via Megaport Blog

By Cameron Daniel, Chief Technology Officer

Bring super-high-bandwidth routing to your multicloud network with our new 100G option for Megaport Cloud Router.

The amount of data processed by the average business on a daily basis is eye-watering, especially when you compare it to pre-COVID numbers. And as AI proliferates and globally remote workforces collaborate to hit tighter deadlines, bandwidth capacity needs just keep increasing.

Over the years, Megaport has been delivering super-high-capacity connectivity to every corner of our network to answer this call. We’ve already offered 100G Ports since 2021, and in 2024 we expanded the presence of our 100G Virtual Cross Connects (VXCs) to 597 data centers worldwide.

Now, we’re excited to complete the trifecta with our latest announcement: 100G MCRs are now available, bringing super-high-bandwidth virtual routing to your multicloud and hybrid cloud network.

What is Megaport Cloud Router?

Megaport Cloud Router (MCR) is our managed virtual router service, enabling direct networking between any two endpoints on the Megaport network. With MCR, you can interconnect your cloud and private workloads at Layer 3 without a physical point of presence, and manage your connections easily with fully integrated control via the Megaport Portal or Megaport Terraform Provider.

You can use MCR to support your multicloud by virtually routing traffic between different cloud environments, connecting it to a Port and bridging the network to a physical location, or supporting more complex routing topologies with BGP.

Unlike establishing a data center presence or provisioning connectivity with a traditional provider, MCR has no long lead times or upfront costs – just point, click, and connect and you’re good to go.

Why 100G MCR?

With Megaport’s new 100G MCRs, you can now deploy high-capacity routing infrastructure, completely on demand.

You can provision 100G MCRs to:

  • interconnect your multicloud or hybrid cloud network with super-fast speeds
  • automate your routing configuration to simplify network operations
  • scale up your operations with no bottlenecks, delays, or downtime
  • run data-heavy cloud migrations and applications with ease
  • simplify capacity planning and management by consolidating your connections
  • improve network resiliency, with the ability to push higher workloads through some connections
  • enjoy uninterrupted connection for faster time to market and better productivity
  • effectively manage traffic spikes and fluctuations – especially important for industries like healthcare, finance, and media
  • future-proof your network so you can adopt new technologies and platforms with ease.

Example use cases

  • A research organization with tight deadlines needs to move large workloads between different cloud regions to complete its research projects. It uses 100G MCRs to make its global transfers fast and efficient, improving productivity and speeding up project completion times.
  • A global media production company collaborates remotely on large video files, but transferring these files between branches and clouds creates massive network fluctuations, interrupting business operations. A 100G MCR significantly speeds up operations and prevents bottlenecks, making these projects run seamlessly.
  • A healthcare provider needs to privately and securely route super-large volumes of healthcare data, but experiences severe network delays and jitter. Instead of establishing a physical point of presence, which comes with high costs and long lead times, the provider deploys a 100G MCR for instant virtual routing with stronger security and no jitter on the MCR.

How to deploy

If you want to deploy a 100G MCR, simply provision your MCR in the Megaport Portal and select 100G bandwidth (where available). Have questions or need guidance? Just reach out to our friendly support team who can help get you set up.

Go forth and get routing!
