I've worn every pair of headphones in Apple's catalog to help you find your iPhone's new best friend.
When you think of earbuds, your mind might conjure a pair of AirPods. Your initial picture makes sense, as even the most basic Apple AirPods are designed to pair with your Apple devices. Their capabilities vary as you encounter more advanced models, though. The recently released AirPods Pro 3 are defined by their in-ear heart rate monitoring and exceptional noise-cancelation, while the basic AirPods 4 are best for baseline features like accessing Siri and listening to music.
The current AirPods lineup includes the premium over-ear AirPods Max, the in-ear AirPods Pro 3, and budget in-ear options, such as the AirPods 4. I've tested every AirPods model and have strong opinions on which pairs are the best for specific use cases. Here's what you should know before making a purchase.

After thoroughly testing all of Apple's AirPods, we've concluded that the best AirPods are the AirPods Pro 3 They have updated advanced software features, new health-tracking features, outstanding noise cancellation, and superior transparency mode.
Our second choice is the premium, over-ear AirPods Max 2, which debuted with an upgraded H2 audio processor for improved noise reduction and audio processing. This chip also brings long-awaited intelligent features to Apple's over-ear headphones, making them a better candidate for everyday use.
In our May update, we added the AirPods Max 2 as a top pick.

Why we like them: The AirPods Pro 3 are Apple's most advanced headphones, offering hearing health features, in-ear heart rate monitoring, effective active and adaptive noise-cancelation, and Apple's superb transparency mode. The AirPods Pro 3's new earbud and ear tip design should help most people achieve a better seal, resulting in improved sound immersion and noise-canceling performance.
Also: AirPods Pro 3 vs. AirPods Pro 2: I compared the two models, and here's who should upgrade
The AirPods Pro 3's noise-cancelation is tangibly improved over its predecessor, although Bose's noise-cancelation still has an edge at canceling lower frequencies. Additionally, the earbuds' heart rate sensor and upgrades to the iOS Fitness app make the Pro 3 more than simply a vessel for canceling noise and playing music -- they're a true companion to your iPhone and can offer more value to your everyday needs.
Who they're for: These AirPods are ideal for iOS users looking for a small, easily pocketable pair of AirPods with advanced, "pro"-level features. The AirPods Pro 3 are ideal for individuals who prefer earbuds instead of over-ear headphones and desire a more discreet option for everyday use.
The AirPods Pro 2 feature an IP57 rating, making them more resistant to dust, sweat, and water than the AirPods Pro 2 (USB-C). The stronger water resistance makes the AirPods and their charging case virtually waterproof -- both can survive water immersion up to three feet for up to 30 minutes. I don't recommend intentionally dunking your AirPods, but if an accident happens, they should be fine.
Working professionals, frequent flyers, and people on the move can appreciate the Pro 3's compatibility with their iPhone, which enables them to control Siri, make and receive phone calls, and add events to their calendars hands-free.
Who should look elsewhere: Although the AirPods Pro 3 are our favorite AirPods for their versatility and performance, consider the AirPods 4 if the Pro 3 are too advanced for your needs, or if you prefer a more traditional fit. If you're looking for over-ear headphones that serve as an auditory companion to your Apple devices, consider the AirPods Max.
The only major software upgrade the Pro 3 has over the Pro 2 is the addition of heart rate tracking. The AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods 4 all utilize Apple's H2 chip, which enables all earbuds to feature Live Translation, Adaptive Audio, and Conversation Mode, and more.
Like all AirPods, you should consider other headphones and earbuds if you have an Android smartphone or tablet, or a Windows or ChromeOS laptop. You'll overpay for these earbuds and miss out on their best features, should you pair them with a non-Apple device.

Why we like them: The AirPods Max 2 are Apple's latest premium over-ear headphones, with the standout feature being Apple's upgraded H2 audio chip. With this new chip, Apple's iOS-exclusive intelligent features, such as Live Translation, Siri Interactions, and Conversation Awareness, make Apple's over-ears significantly more useful in everyday life.
Aside from new features, the AirPods Max 2's H2 upgrade brings improved noise-cancelation, noise processing, and audio performance. The AirPods Max 2 have a great sound profile, with a tight, present bass response, a pleasant shine in the treble, and dynamic, colorful sound. Like the 2024 USB-C version, users can access 24-bit/48 kHz lossless audio, low latency, and audio recording and mixing in Personalized Spatial Audio when plugged into a compatible device.
Also: Do Apple's new AirPods Max 2 beat the AirPods Pro 3? I've tried both, here's my take
Who they're for: These headphones are ideal for people with at least one Apple device as the best H2-powered features like spatial audio, automatic device switching, and Find My are reserved for Apple users. I recommend these headphones most for Apple power users with an extensive Apple device ecosystem.
For iOS users deciding between the AirPods Max and Apple's Pro-level earbuds, the AirPods Max are the best choice for traveling, professional audio editing and recording, and intense working. Their over-ear form factor provides a more immersive audio and noise-canceling experience.
Who should look elsewhere: I do not recommend Android users pay the AirPods Max 2's hefty price tag, as they work best with Apple devices. Ideally, the AirPods Max 2 would fit into your Apple ecosystem with at least one other Apple device, such as a MacBook or iPad, in addition to your iPhone.
You should consider the AirPods Pro 3 if your audio experience mostly consists of hands-free calls and listening to music while exercising or running errands. The AirPods Pro 3 are considerably cheaper than the AirPods Max 2, while offering a compact, easily portable form factor for everyday use.

Why we like them: The AirPods 4 with Active Noise-Cancelation (ANC) are Apple's upper midrange AirPods. We like these earbuds because they offer the best features of AirPods at a lower price. The AirPods 4 feature Transparency mode, Adaptive Noise-Cancelation, and Spatial Audio, making them the ideal AirPods for casual, everyday use.
The AirPods 4 with ANC are more advanced than the model without it, but less advanced than the AirPods Pro 3. Still, this model sports Apple's H2 chip, which allows for advanced software features, including Live Translation.
Review: AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with ANC
Who they're for: The AirPods 4 with noise-cancelation are best suited for iOS users who want Apple's best earbud features without the in-ear fit that the AirPods Pro 3 provide. The AirPods 4 feature an in-ear fit, allowing more ambient noise to enter your ear and providing a comfortable fit. Still, the AirPods 4 are excellent for making and taking casual phone calls on the go, and they have enough water resistance (IP54) to accompany you to your after-work workout.
They're ideal for people who want a relaxed fit and some advanced software features, but don't need ultra-strong noise-cancelation, in-ear heart rate monitoring, or hearing aid performance.
Who should look elsewhere: You should not purchase the AirPods 4 if the traditional plastic AirPods tend to fall out of your ears. Unlike the AirPods Pro 3, the AirPods 4 do not have silicone tips to help keep the earbuds in place. Otherwise, the AirPods 4 with noise-cancelation offer many of the same advanced software features as their more expensive counterpart, making them a great option for iOS users who don't want to pay a premium for the Pro model.

Why we like them: Apple's base model AirPods 4 provide a simple and practical experience to Apple users. These AirPods debuted with significant upgrades from the third-generation model, offering a more comfortable fit, enhanced sound quality, and improved dust resistance.
Additionally, these AirPods are among the most affordable AirPods during major sales, with prices as low as $100. In comparison, the AirPods 3, which are less advanced than the AirPods 4, are still $150 during sales.
Also: How to clean and sanitize your AirPods (and why you should)
Who they're for: I recommend these AirPods for people who want a simple AirPods experience. If you don't like noise-canceling earbuds, these are a solid option. The AirPods 4 would be ideal for individuals seeking Apple-branded earbuds for making and taking phone calls, as well as for casual music listening. You should choose the AirPods 4 if you don't require advanced software features and instead want a pair of no-frills Apple earbuds that work well with your Apple devices.
Who should look elsewhere: You should consider other options, like the AirPods 4 with ANC, if you want AirPods with more advanced software features, like Conversation Awareness, Adaptive ANC, and wireless charging.

If you're still trying to decide which set of AirPods to buy, here's the main reason to buy each product in the lineup.
Choose this pair of Apple AirPods... | If you want... |
AirPods Pro 3 | Apple's most upgraded and capable headphones. These earbuds offer impressive noise-cancelation, are compatible with the Vision Pro headset, and have an in-canal fit for enhanced immersion. |
AirPods Max 2 | Over-ear headphones with Apple-specific features. Although you can find less Apple-restricted headphones with similar performance for cheaper, these headphones shine with their integration with Apple devices. |
AirPods 4 with ANC | Impressive AirPods without the advanced features found in the Pro 2. If you want noise-cancelation and spatial audio without the cutting-edge tech, these are perfect for you. |
AirPods 4 | An even more watered-down pair of Apple earbuds. These earbuds lack noise-cancelation but offer spatial audio and Siri integration. |

I have been using AirPods every day for over five years, and have tried all of the various models. I've also used many other wireless earbuds, wireless over-the-ear headphones, and wired earbuds and headphones. I've used inexpensive $20 models and I've used ones that cost over $500. I've taken all of that experience and used it to make recommendations on the best AirPods to buy, based on the AirPods' performance, battery life, customer reviews, your needs, your use cases, and your budget.
