The 6 Best Electric Scooters for Kids That Offer Safety and Speed

E200 Electric Scooter

Pros

  • All-steel frame and fork
  • Up to 8 miles of range

Cons

  • Heavy frame (38 pounds) makes it hard for kids to carry

The successor to the E100—our previous best overall pick—the Razor E200 steps things up with a more powerful 200-watt motor and a higher top speed of 12 miles per hour. Like its predecessor, it comes from one of the most recognizable names in scooters, and its all-steel frame and fork should hold up well to regular use. The 8-inch pneumatic tires on both the front and rear wheels are a welcome improvement over the E100, which used a solid rear tire that made for bumpier rides.

Razors lists up to 40 minutes of continuous ride time and an 8-mile range, though real-world results will vary based on rider weight, terrain, and speed. The 154-pound weight limit accommodates older and larger kids better than many competitors on this list. The trade-off is the E100 is one of the heavier options here at 38 pounds, so younger riders will likely need a hand carrying it.

GKS Mini Electric Scooter

Pros

  • Built-in acceleration and motor activation buttons
  • Comes in three different colors

Cons

  • It has a relatively low range

This electric scooter from Gotrax solves the throttle issue by putting its acceleration mechanism directly in the deck. There are two integrated buttons: one that activates the motor and one that triggers acceleration. This two-button process means the electric scooter won’t fly out of hand and only works when the rider is standing securely on the deck.

This design also eliminates the need for separate handlebar brakes. Instead, the scooter immediately begins slowing down once you lift your foot off the deck buttons.

The scooter maxes out at around 7.5 miles per hour and only has a range of about 4 miles, but you likely won’t find a better overall option at this price point.

Ninebot eKickScooter C2 Lite

Pros

  • Power modes allow for riders to age into more speed
  • Under-deck LED lights

Cons

  • Some users report that the battery degrades quickly

Segway has a wide range of kid-focused electric scooters including the C2 Pro, which stands out from the pack for its affordable price, multiple riding modes, and under-deck lighting. It also has an adjustable handlebar.

For young riders, set the electric scooter to reduced acceleration mode while kids learn the basics. It brings the max speed down to just 7.5 miles per hour so in the event of an inevitable fall, the feature reduces the chance of serious scraps or bruises.

The faster accelerating sport mode brings the top speed up to 9.9 miles per hour. The power assist mode reduces the need for using the throttle. Instead, with every kick, the motor automatically keeps you gliding.

PR Electric Scooter

Pros

  • Three speed modes let beginners ease into it
  • Lightweight and foldable at 22 pounds

Cons

  • Listed top speed of 19 mph can be dangerous for younger riders

The Maxshot PR has a listed range of 12 miles on a single charge, making it a solid option for school commutes or longer neighborhood rides. Its three-speed mode system, controlled through a companion app, is the key feature here. Beginner mode caps the scooter at 7.5 mph for younger or less experienced riders, while daily and sport modes raise the limit to 11 and 19 mph respectively.

Parents will want to manage which mode their child is using, as 19 mph is considerably faster than most kids’ push scooters. At 22 pounds, it folds for easy storage, and it’s also UL 2272 certified, meaning it meets certain safety standards.

GXL V2 Electric Scooter

Pros

  • Puncture-proof solid tires require no maintenance
  • Foldable aluminum frame at around 26 pounds

Cons

  • No speed-limiting modes for beginners

The GXL V2 is marketed as an adult commuter scooter, but its specs make it a natural fit for teens and older kids who have outgrown entry-level models. With a listed top speed of 15.5 mph and a 220-pound weight limit, it accommodates larger riders and offers more speed than the other scooters on this list. It’s worth noting, though, that the GXL V2 has no option to limit its top speed.

That higher speed also means this isn’t the right choice for a first-time rider, but it’s well suited for kids who already have experience on a scooter and can handle the faster acceleration. Meanwhile, it features 8.5-inch solid honeycomb tires won’t go flat, which cuts down on maintenance.

Pocket Mod Petite Kids Electric Scooter

Now 10% Off

Pros

  • Comfortable padded seat
  • Pneumatic tires make for a smooth ride

Cons

  • No training wheels available

This Euro-style scooter from Razor not only has the same sit-down design as a Vespa, but also is built to look like a miniaturized version of one. With a two-tone color scheme and a retro frame, your kid could be cruising around the block like they are pulling up to a cafe in Rome.

The classic design is backed up with several solid features, including a retractable kickstand and pneumatic tires with a white-wall ring. While Razor doesn’t list a range listed in distance, the scooter rides for 40 minutes continuously before it needs to be recharged.

If you’re looking for a bigger version of this for your pre-teens or young teens, Razor offers the Pocket Mod and Pocket Mod Belleza with faster speeds, longer range, and higher weight limits.
