Two teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of murder after allegedly fatally punching a pensioner in the face following a heated exchange.
The man in his 70s died after confronting two males who had thrown a large branch off the Millennium Bridge in Cheltenham at a cyclist travelling on the road below.
It is not believed the cyclist was injured in the incident and the males later left the bridge before being approached by the pensioner on Honeybourne Way.
An exchange took place between them before one of the males punched the victim in the face causing him to fall to the ground.
The suspects then fled before officers arrived at the location. Emergency services also attended and the victim was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.
He had been in a critical condition and died in hospital earlier today, Gloucestershire Police said. His next of kin and the coroner have been informed, the force added.
Following police enquiries at the scene and a review of CCTV, images were released to the public in a bid to identify two males.
A 17-year-old boy was arrested last night and a 16-year-old boy was arrested in the early hours of this morning.

They were initially arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm before the man's death. They have since been rearrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody.
A force spokeswoman said police were called with a report of an incident involving three males at about 7.30pm on Wednesday.
She said: 'It was reported that two males had been on the Millennium Bridge and had thrown a large branch at a cyclist who was travelling on the road below. It is not believed the cyclist was injured.
'The males then left the bridge and were approached by the victim, a man aged in his 70s, on Honeybourne Way.
'It is reported an exchange took place between them before one of the males punched the victim in the face causing him to fall to the ground.
'The suspects then fled before officers arrived at the location.
'Emergency services attended and the victim was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.'
